What are the problems with Hoard of the Dragon Queen? /u/CrimsonPresents DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hi!

I’m planning on running Hoard of the Dragon Queen for my next campaign but I’ve heard varying rumors about it. What are something’s I need to watch out for?

[OC] [Art] I drew my character and I love her! /u/EmiliaTrown DnD: Roll for Initiative!

So I just found a new group to play with after a couple of years and my last character was one I created before knowing anything about anything. So this time I wanted to give her a real back Story, real character traits etc. She is da Druid and she lived with her parents near a City, they were advisors for the Baron of the city. One year, there were horrible rains and landslides and all the harvest was destroyed. The Baron thought that her parents had done this intentionally and commissioned his mage to punish them. Since the mage and her parents hated each other because her parents thought his magic was unnatural and malicious and he thought they were ridiculous and laughable. So as punishment and out of mockery he transformed their daughter into a fox and they were all banished. Over the years her parents searched for a way to transform her back into a human but noone could help them. Until they found a group of Druids who said they were able to help but in exchange the parents had to commit their lifes to the group of Druids. The parents agreed but wanted their daughter to at least be free. The Druids transformed their daughter back but only in part, so she was now a mix between fox and human. But she was all alone and had to leave her parents behind. She wandered aimlessly for a long time but found a place in the woods where she built herself a small home in the trees, for years she didnt see another human. But then one day she saw people cutting down trees near her and found out that the Baron of the city that wasn’t too far away planned to expand his city and clearing the forest in the process. She tried to fight it but couldnt and when her house was also destroyed she fled and swore herself to train to be a better fighter and take revenge.

I don’t know how correct this backstory is to be honest but I just loved the story so much and it gives me so many characteristics to work with. So please be nice

Was I unfair /u/TheDiceWhisperer DnD: Roll for Initiative!

One of my players is a fighter. During character creation, he shared a backstory about saving an old woman from a bear attack in a forest. In return, she taught him the Shadow Touched feat. (I encourage my players to come up with narrative reasons for their feats.)

I asked him if his character knew how the woman had learned these spells. He said no, his character didn’t know. I responded, “Okay, I’ll fill in the blanks however I want. Are you okay with that?” He agreed.

I made her undead necromancer. In my games, alignment isn’t a rigid framework. For example, lawful good goblins are possible, and the players are aware of this flexibility. The woman was a lich but wasn’t a typical lich; she didn’t have the usual trappings of evil. Instead, her phylactery was a painting that aged instead of her. She does not trap souls

Fast forward a few sessions: the party encountered the woman again. This time, the paladin discovered she was an undead. When the party questioned her, she revealed she was a lich. The fighter was visibly afraid by this revelation and ran away from her.

After the session, the player confronted me, saying, “Why did you do that? I didn’t write her as a lich.” He explained that he had envisioned her as a nature spirit.

Am ı unfair?

The world is 3d, utslize that for combat /u/PlayPod DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Theres so many ways you can use the environment to your advantage as a dm. Too many people think about combat as a flat 2d plain(since battle maps are flat) unless its an obvious vertical setting like a ship having a mass or whatever. but it very much doesnt have to be. Make battles have more environmental obstacles and verticality to make it more exciting. Not every battle has to be but you can add more to make it varried.

Is it worth buying the digital player handbook on DND Beyond? /u/Ok-Dot2211 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m a new player just starting to get into DND. I don’t own any of the books. I was considering the digital+print deal on DND Beyond because I like to have a physical book and it looks like DND Beyond is the easiest way to quickly learn how to build new characters correctly. Any thoughts or advice? Thank you!

DM refused to let me use a spell /u/Adhamrollin DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hello, This may be long but I would like to know if i am in the wrong here. Some information I am a relatively new player that’s been playing for a few months. I am not experienced on all aspects of the game but i know most of the important rules. I was playing a Hexblade Warlock, i wouldn’t call myself an optimizer but i like to do some cool team thing with my other party members. I was talking with the Artificer about the Darkness spell, and that i also have Devil’s Sight to see through it which could grant us some cool stealthy moments or combat advantage. DM was also in the Call and told me that Darkness wouldn’t work, now i asked why. He said because thats not how light works and that the Darkness would be covered even though the spell goes as following

Darkness

2nd-level evocation

Casting Time: 1 action Range: 60 feet Components: V, M (bat fur and a drop of pitch or piece of coal) Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose within range to fill a 15-foot radius sphere for the duration. The darkness spreads around corners. A creature with darkvision can’t see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can’t illuminate it.

If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn’t being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it. Completely covering the source of the darkness with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the darkness.

If any of this spell’s area overlaps with an area of light created by a spell of 2nd level or lower, the spell that created the light is dispelled.

Spell Lists. Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

He told me that the Darkness would be covered, I said i would just cast it on my hat (my character wore a hat) He said no. He told my that it was an “unoriginal” choice and then started listening other min maxing options which i really didn’t care about, He said he gives ALL his monsters blindsight in a 5 foot range, My character died before the end of the next session but that’s another story for another day. Was i wrong?

Update: I read through some of your comments and opinion and want to reply to some stuff

1-Many people said that Darkness would be a hindrance, and you are correct. But i wanted it to be a situational spell and not something i would push every encounter, For example if it was an open field with a lot of space to move, or i would also ask my Allies if i should cast it or not. I would try to be as much of a team player as possible

2- I already left the game, i share some other games with this guy and he’s not the most pleasant. He critiques everyone’s choices in anything and is just not the most fun to be around. We are a small group and sometimes other people like to host games, and overall i am not the only person who doesn’t enjoy him being around. I stopped playing in his game but still in the group as i enjoy it a lot
