Filler Sessions? Does it exist and what are they? If yes, is it a good or bad thing? If no, explain why there isn’t such a thing! /u/Astar7es DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I don’t know how to start this I guess answering my own question should be good way to start. I believe filler sessions exist. These are sessions where nothing happens. That means there is no progression in the main plot, personal goals, or character development. I have experienced so many sessions that all we did was rolled dice doing random stuff that didn’t affect any of those points. RP was present *but* it was the type of RP that didn’t build anything between characters nor players. I personally think it’s a bad thing.

But apparently some people think that filler sessions doesn’t exist. I say they are lucky that they never encountered such a session. But the same people also say that my perspective on the subject matter is flawed, therefore I’m just wondering what the hive mind thinks and maybe it will give a better way of seeing things.

Do you guys think cone attacks are 3D or 2D? /u/RedMcJack DnD: Roll for Initiative!

So my party recently defeated a white dragon and one of the party members didn’t like that the dragon’s cone attack could hit him and the other party members because he was flying and they were on the ground and he said “it’s a cone-shaped attack because the dragon is moving it’s head side to side” and I told him a cone is a 3d shape and I’m going to implement it as such, he’s one of those pissy players who gets grumpy when he doesn’t get his way, but it did make me wonder if other dms consider cones 3d or 2d?

How do I tell my friend I don’t want to play DND with them? /u/Extra_Display_2610 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

For some context, he invited me to a “one shot” where you play a one session campaign, and keep in mind, this was my first ever experience with dungeons and dragons, and had never played beforehand. I enjoyed the session, but I don’t think dnd is really my thing, and he’s already invited me to a campaign that he said is meant to last about a year, and I don’t really want to go, but I’d feel bad since he made a group chat about it and I am one of 4 people in it, and he has already given me a bag of dice for the campaign. Any advice?

Edit: for clarification, he is under the impression I am coming guaranteed, although I never actually confirmed I want to do the campaign

Help me design a dragon’s lair encounter. /u/leon-june DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Help me design a dragon’s lair encounter. /u/leon-june DnD: Roll for Initiative!

This is intended to be a challenge for my players who want to fight an ancient red dragon. I plan for an old dwarven forging hall to have been taken over by an aging red dragon whose memory and mind are failing her—as well as her body, as her age has claimed her vision. This makes her no less dangerous, however. In fact, it makes her less predictable and more prone to outbursts of fiery violence against anything and everything before her. She is a scourge on the surrounding lands and a local lord will be offering the party 500gp each, as well as the dragon’s horde, to rid them of her.

The first part of the dungeon is intended to be a pretty straightforward “fight the kobolds” resource-draining dungeon crawl.

The second part is the dragon’s lair, where they see her atop her hoard. I want her to recognize the scent of sulfur and filth on them and believe them to be her kobold worshippers. I’m just not sure how to make that interesting for them. I want to make a fun social encounter with an unpredictable and dangerous blind dragon with a failing memory that leads into a challenging boss fight with interesting lair actions and all that. (Party is level 7 with magic items. They want a real challenge, so I’m hoping for this encounter to be deadly.)

Any advice is appreciated!! <3

How much gold/magic items should I give characters coming in at higher levels? /u/jaredkent DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I saw a great table in here a couple of weeks ago detailing every level and what their starting equipment should be based on what level they are joining the campaign. Of course, I forgot to save it and now can’t find it anywhere. Does anyone have anything of the sort? I’ve seen varying suggestions in the 2014 DMG and Xanathar’s. I’m not sure if Tasha’s weighs in. I didn’t see anything in the 2024 DMG, which are the rules we are playing by, but I’ll take any table from 5e that helps. The table in the 2014 DMG seems really low and doesn’t align with what Xanathar’s says.

What do you guys recommend? Anyone have a good table they go by? Gold and magic item count would be nice, but I’ll look at anything anyone might have.

There’s been much discussion about which ability you’d choose to max in real life, or what standard array you would choose to apply to yourself if that were possible. But if you had the option to instantly have expertise in a D&D skill, what would you pick?
