Something unbelievable happened… /u/ferdarakanec DnD: Roll for Initiative!

We were playing DnD with boys last night and our squad got lost in a forest. So i (PC) said: “You know what, i’ll climb this freaking tall tree, look around and see what i see, right?” “Allright,” said the DM, “that’s an acrobatics check.” So i rolled the d20 and 1 happened. Gosh! But! I am halfling, right, so i’ve got this lucky halfling thing when you can reroll the 1. So i did that and i rolled 20! Amazing! From zero to hero.

I climbed that freaking tall tree easily like a freaking monkey, looked around and found the way.

So we continued in our journey, some encounters happened, we were fighting, etc, many d20 rolls happened… and we lost our track again. So i said: “You know what, i’ll climb this tree, look around and see what i see.” “Sure, that’s an acrobatics check.” So i rolled the d20 and 1 happened again! No way! But the lucky halfling thing, sure, okay, let’s reroll… and i rolled 20! It happened again! Exact same situation, exact same rolls! It happened twice, we couldn’t believe it. Laughed for 10 minutes straight and joked around that like freaking kindergarden kids.

It was a good laugh.

[OC] Dual Nat 20s? Well I got Dual Nat 1s… /u/wmartin2014 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Our companion was pulled into the plane of fire and possessed by a spirit that manifested them as a giant monster the rest of us had to fight. As the battle went on, we felt victory was near. My druid, in an attempt to finish the fight, conjured 8 wolves (that looked like flame wolves because it’s the plane of fire, why not?). With pack tactics they all get advantage on attacks. Well one of them was a real moon moon. Double nat 1s. Only 3 of my wolves hit but two got nat 20s. Was a fun fight!

Players spend 1.5 hours planning how to assault a pirate ship, get swallowed by sea monster on the way /u/Lagom1s DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Context: I play in a pirate campaign, our DM is fairly new to DMing. Party gets information about a ship carrying Mcguffin we need. Players then spend 1.5 hours discussing how we should steal Mcguffin from a pirate ship. Once we form a plan that looks the least suicidal, we begin making it the reality. We then get swallowed by a sea monster, obviously the DM intented for us to not spend so much time thinking about it.

We all agreed that it would’ve been a bit stupid and immersion-breaking to not spend at least some time thinking about it, but it still feels weird to make so big of an effort planning for something for it to just be in vain.

If you were the DM in this position, what would you do? Do you hint the party that desinging a complex plan in unneccesary? Do you roll with it and consider planning time to be cool roleplay moment?

And what do you think about the situation as a whole? If this happend at your table, how would you react?

What’s your favorite DnD character that you’ve ever made? /u/AwkwardLaw1125 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Honestly, I’m new to DnD and have never played it. I‘ve been invited recently to play with some friends, so I kinda just wanna know what some characters are like to evaluate how to make my own. Thanks to anyone who answers!

My favorite DnD moment /u/Key_Bread_8965 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Okay, there’s a strong possibility nobody will read this and I’m fine with that. I just wanted to post the story somewhere because it’s the best moment in DnD I’ve had thus far.

So, for context, my character is a wooden marionette that’s possessed by the soul of a sorcerer who died hundreds of years ago. He was brought back to life spontaneously after a barabarian found the box the marrionette was stored in. He was certain that the barbarian had brought him back to life and due to his lawful-type alignment, he stuck to his morals and started following the barabarian until he could repay his debt to her (which is something he does with everyone he feels he’s in debt to).

Basically the BBG of the campaign was the goddess of strife and necromancy. During our first fight with her she immediately zeroed in on my character and paralyzed him with magic. She then priceeded to tell him that she was the one who brought him back to life and she wanted him to join her and turn his back on the other people of the campaign. The conversation went as follows:

“Without my magic, you’d still be dead, little puppet. Join me and I’ll return your human form.”

My character, obviously shook, looked over at the other members of the campaign. Unsure of what to do, he speaks to the goddess. “My lady… I’m still in dept to the barbarian of this campaign. I can’t just turn my back on her.”

The goddess looked annoyed. “You owe nothing to that brute! I was the one who brought you back, not her! But fine, if you wish not to serve me, I hope that in a hundred more years you’ll have changed your tune.”

She then proceeded to rip my character’s soul out of the marionette and hold it as my body collapsed.

Luckily, the party ended up being able to get my character’s soul back into the marrionette, but it did leave him very shaken up.

So excited to continue playing this story!

I swear to god, the dice KNOWS my stats /u/Few_Assumption_1300 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m not even sure if this is the right tag, but I wasn’t sure what else to put.

So basically, most of my stats are pretty good, except Charisma, which is a 7 (a -2 modifier). I don’t think I’ve ever rolled higher than a five on a charisma roll. I rolled with advantage and still rolled a three. With my modifier, I’ve gotten several NEGATIVE numbers.

The dice knows. It fucking knows. This degree of bad luck is improbable.
