Homebrew Red Flags /u/SnooRadishes4895 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Just curious to see what everyone’s opinion on this. I’m a DM who has exclusively run homebrew campaigns since I’ve started and really don’t have much experience what red flags would look like.

What is everyone’s red flags when playing in a homebrew campaign and what would everyone’s green flags be.

Keep Volos or buy monsters of multiverse? /u/edsjfhek DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hi, I own 2014 PHB, xanathar, Tasha, MOM and Volos. I’m looking at keeping a thin collection as 2024 is trickling out, but I want a good selection of races to choose for characters.

Should I swap Volos for multiverse is my question, as I’m mainly after whatever book has the best designed monsters/races and I know multi has altered Volos content. Is the extra content/revisions of multiverse worth buying or is the stuff already in Volos enough/of a better quality?

Thanks for all feedback

[Art][Homebrew] My Wold Map!! /u/MoosestachPro DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hi all!

It’s my first time DMing and I may have gone overboard from excitement and spent nearly 48 hours creating a world map and then making several variations of it… For some reason it’s only letting me upload one, so I’ll just put the most detailed, labeled, and best one

When I was making my map I struggled a bit to find fantasy biome inspirations or references, so I thought why not share my finished pieces here.

(I also may just want to show someone since I can’t express my excitement to players who will be able to find, purchase, and label maps as they explore)

I gave everyone the continent map and a small piece of map based on where they are from and any regional information there character would know before campaign actually begins.

If you could, I would really appreciate any homebrew tips, map suggestions, or even general advice. Also, any suggestions for how i should space out giving them maps?? I have played three campaigns and listen to pod casts, so I’m not nervous per say but I’d also like to be over prepared than under.

Thanks for reading!

A quick Sketch from my Companion [OC] /u/Shadowzwz DnD: Roll for Initiative!

My DND-companion drew what he thought my Character would look like ingame (all i told him is that i was an earth mage, high-elf with blonde, shoulder length hair). He took like 5 Minutes

For a brand new player and group, what can I learn from popular shows like d20 and critical roll, and in what ways should I not try to replicate the “professional entertainment” aspects of these shows? /u/Royal-Foundation6057 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Basically the title. I’m a new player in a group of all new players with a DM with a little experience playing and a lot of experience enjoying watching DnD content. We are one session into our campaign, with the second coming soon. I’m really enjoying D20 (and playing BG3), what lessons can I learn from this that will support making our campaign pretty good? Are there any potential pitfalls I could run into by looking at these experienced and professional campaigns as a model?

How to tell my table I think we are leveling too slow? /u/Ka-ne1990 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

How to tell my table I think we are leveling too slow? /u/Ka-ne1990 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

First off I’ll get this out of the way. I am a player at this table and absolutely understand that the DM has discretion on how fast we level.

So here’s the setup. We are two years into a campaign we play bi-weekly, we certainly missed a few sessions but probably get 20 sessions a year in, so 40 sessions now. We are level 6.

Part of the problem is that, although I enjoy the roll playing part of the game, my party (and DM) are perfectly fine doing two or three weeks in a town making little to no progress.. like shopping and talking with pointless NPCs that do nothing for us. This is my wife’s first time DMing, (I was the DM for the past 5 years before this campaign), and I have a hard time communicating this too her.

She’ll asks for help, or what I think, and when I give my advice she seems like I’m telling her she not a good DM, which I don’t believe. So this is hard to just bring up our of no where because she doesn’t seem to think this is a problem. I know she has plans to take the campaign to atleast level 15 or 16, if not all the way to twenty.. but I don’t want to play this one campaign for the next 10 years.

Ultimately I know the answer is to either get over it and enjoy the ride or man up and talk to her like an adult, so this is probably just a “clear my head” post rather than seeking actual advice, however if anyone has dealt with a campaign going painfully slow before then I’d like to hear how it turned out.

Tl;Dr 2 year campaign and we are level 6.. I’m 34 and I’ll retire before reaching level 20 at this rate.

Ps. We are using milestone leveling, and I don’t think XP leveling would be any faster based on how spread out serious battles are.

Idiot player is way too literal /u/PinkMask_811 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’ll keep it shortish and sweet:

As a DM, I give a flamboyant player of mine (based off of Tybalt from Romeo and Juliet) a task from a powerful king to plant evidence (a handful of orange hairs) at a failed assassination site to deter investigators. This guy sprints over, army-crawls next to the crime scene, digs a hole in the ground, and plants these hairs like you would a watermelon seed or carrot seed. I, extremely confused, questioned his actions, and if that was what he really wanted to do, and he then replies equally confused that yes, he wants to plant the hairs. I give a look to the other players who were grinning like fools. We keep playing as normal, and It’s not until after he speaks to the king in question that it dawns on him what he was supposed to do. At first I thought he was roleplaying his 8 Wisdom character, but turns out IRL he has 8 Wisdom (maybe 7). We still laugh about it now. It’s not the first time this guy fell for something so laughable, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. This is what makes DnD great.

So my BF is DMing a group of girls, and it’s our first time playing! We all love it, I am playing an elf rogue and I love her!!

Last session, we had to race bad guys in mine carts, which was awesome and I had some dynamite in the cart with us! I wanted to throw a dynamite stick to the evil cart but rolled a 1 and the stick ended up in our cart! We laughed a lot, we all almost died! I love that game!
