Making a campaign as someone learning the rules of the game /u/TheAnarchistArchives DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I have wanted to DM for a long time, I’ve finally convinced my cousins to play a game with me for my first official campaign. The problem is I don’t have resources like the books to guide me on how to make the mechanics. I’ve played BG3 and watched Critical Role play, so I have basic knowledge of some aspects.

I’ve got the plot, quests, loot, and other story telling aspects down. Any place where I can find easy to understand guides on gameplay? Because at this time it is immensely hard to find any D&D related things directly after Christmas in my hometown, we live smack-bang in the middle of nowhere.

What are your favourite quirks you’ve given to characters? /u/aletraidi DnD: Roll for Initiative!

My tabaxi barbarian was convinced that the toothfairy brought milk in their (magical) fridge. She was also afraid of ghosts (because she was once possessed and almost drowned by one) and during an encounter opened a door, saw a ghost in the room, proceeded to close said door and dashed away to hide behind something. At the end of the campaign she also learned speak with animals and became the “overlord” of some chickens by offering them some seeds.

Am I overreacting? /u/LeGiant DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I have been DMing in and off for about 15 years and have ran a couple 3+ year campaigns. My current group has a play that does not read his character sheet or abilities. I have asked him several times to read the entire text of an ability before using it or asking questions about it. I have never had a player who doesn’t understand their character and is also seemingly not trying to understand their character. This has been going on for months, and it is just so tiring. My main question is will I be overreacting if I hand him a PHB and tell him to read it before the next session? I feel like this is my only option besides asking him to leave the group.
