As the title says… been thinking of a bbeg for my head canon PC (for shits and giggles really, I dunno it’s how I pass the time at work haha). But anyways… Therizdun’s relationship to ego, and madness, and self perpetuated misery via his own prison is really intriguing. Is there a reason (canonical power wise? too much of the same?) he’s not on the same level as like Vecna or the like?

Purchasing older books /u/mrrosencrantz DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hi All – brand new to the world of DND and started my first campaign recently. I tend to go head on into new hobbies so it’s a constant struggle not to want to buy everything. We are using the 2024 rules and I purchased the 2024 PHB.

I am thinking of purchasing one of the older companion books (VRGtR) because I love horror. Do you think it’s worth it or is there a high chance they will republish things like that with a 2024 version and I should wait?

Three questions i have after reading the phb as a beginner DM /u/All_i_say_is_cap DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I apologize really if i missed something or if im slow, but after reading i still cant understand some things, like:

When in combat, playing as the enemy, is there a scheme i have to follow with attacks, movement, targetting, or do i have to come up with it myself and try to make it balanced?

How do i calculate the DC of enemy saving throws? Like, when someone casts a spell on them, where can i find the DC they have to surpass?

When do players make saving throws in combat? Do they just get hit always when the enemy attacks or does it work like for the monsters, where you can only dodge spells?

My party size has grown immensely and it honestly scares me a bit /u/Shut_up_and_Respawn DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Update: I am going to let my party know that 8 is too many players. I will ask for volunteers to quit (they can still observe) and use a random number generator if not enough volunteer to quit. That way no one will feel targeted. I might still allow the players that quit to make occasional cameos

Even more info: This campaign is long. Probably around 25-30 sessions in length, depending on how much of the side content my players do. I have poured my heart and soul into this campaign, spending way too much time worldbuilding, intricately designing NPCs, and creating quests. Well over 200 hours were put into it. I know this campaign really well, which might make getting a second DM problematic

More info: While I am a first time DM, I have run a few one-shots. I feel slightly comfortably running with this many players because I have spent well over 200 hours creating this campaign and know it like the back of hand. I am going to get make cards for everyone with their character names. I might get a second DM. I am going to ask my Earth Science teacher if I can borrow her buzzer system so that players can get my attention one at a time. For more context, I have a high school junior and my party range from sophomores to seniors

My school has a pretty sizeable gaming club. 30+ people, 5 e-sports teams, and an entire switch library for just the club. It’s mostly smash ultimate and Mario cart that we play, but sometimes Magic the Gathering and other board games.

I recently deciding to give my DnD campaign a try in gaming club. I didn’t expect much from the club, maybe 3-4 players at most. For session 0, that was how it went. 4 players with another 2 just observing. Fast forward to now (session 3 is in a few days), and I have 8 confirmed players with 3 more observing to see if they want to join. I am having a very difficult time remembering character names and which goes with which player. All but 2 players are new to DnD, and this is my 1st time running a dedicated campaign as a DM.

Is there anyone else with a party size of 8+ that has some tips? I love hosting, and the amount of players is nice, albeit a bit daunting. I don’t want to cut players out or tell others they can’t join, but I think I will have to put a limit on the number that can join.

What should I do?

Help me being a bad spy /u/May0nnaiz DnD: Roll for Initiative!

My character had to make a deal with the BBEG to get out of the Shadowfell, and the deal is if I come back to my friends I basically have to report everything we do to him. I of course can’t inform my party, and he will know if I lie or don’t mention information. So, how would you go about being the worst spy possible ? I was thinking about trying to subtly suggest to them to lie to me, tell me fake names of the places we go, and false information also. However I can’t just tell them as is, as the BBEG will know and probably won’t like it. Anybody having more creative ideas ? 🙂

Hi! I need some help building a character. /u/kingbatman1996 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

The character is a Minotaur who was raised for war. But when he was almost killed. He got blessed/cursed by a god. The god gave him empathy and forced him to be his shepherd.

So he’s a giant hulking beast that’s forced to manly play support. And he has a magic bible that he can’t seem to fit rid of, because it literally follows him around. I also want the book to be full of rap lyrics. That what sound like wise words. So if you know any share.

Any ideas on what class or anything I should go with to fit the character?

I genuenly spent 8 hours yesterday developing the geography of a kingdom in my home brew world, economics and stuff.

I can legit spend more time like this than playing the game as DM. Maybe I just hate being the DM idk.

Is anyone else like this?

Tips for a Vengeace Paladin 🙂 /u/Additional-Fail5367 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hi guys, I’m about to play a Vengeance Paladin for the first time. I was wondering, can he be arrogant, cocky, and always ready with a witty remark, or does he have to be a serious, Batman-like character? 🙂
