[art][oc] Countess Saphira /u/Beholder_Testicles DnD: Roll for Initiative!

This piece is all about Countess Saphira, my fierce and stunning mermaid character from the fantasy world I’m working on. I spent way too much time on the details here (looking at you, hair and scales), but it was absolutely worth it. The hair was the trickiest part—I wanted it to really feel like it’s underwater, flowing with that slow, hypnotic movement you’d see in the deep. I’m super happy with how it turned out: a mix of bold waves and delicate curls that almost have a life of their own, giving her a regal and ethereal vibe.

The scales took about as long as the hair, but I’m not even mad about it because the final result really pops. Adding the coral-colored accents was a late decision, but I think it made all the difference. It brought more depth and energy to the lower half of her design, making the scales look alive and dynamic—like they’re catching the light of some hidden ocean sun. The armor was a fun challenge too; I wanted it to feel organic but still sharp and battle-ready. Her chest piece and gauntlets look like they’ve grown out of the sea itself, intricate and spiny but perfectly functional for a leader who’s no stranger to the battlefield.

Countess Saphira might look like a dream, but don’t let that fool you. She’s not just a pretty face swimming through my setting. She’s a tactician, a leader who commands respect and wields her authority like a blade. She didn’t get to where she is by accident—her country and armies follow her because she’s clever, strategic, and unshakable in a fight. I like to imagine her standing at the helm of her forces, issuing orders with that calm intensity that makes even the fiercest warriors listen. There’s this underlying strength to her, a kind of quiet confidence that balances her beauty with a real sense of danger.

I wanted to bring all of that out in this piece. The elegance, the power, the subtle menace—it’s all there in her expression and pose. Her piercing gaze says she’s analyzing every move you might make, and the slight tilt of her head hints that she’s already five steps ahead. She’s graceful, deadly, and completely at home in the depths of her ocean kingdom. I’m beyond happy with how she turned out, and she’s quickly becoming one of my favorite characters to work on. Tell me what you think of her!

My girlfriend’s first character, Bruxa Evora! [art][comm] /u/ProfessorLovely DnD: Roll for Initiative!

A long time ago my girlfriend created her first DnD character: Bruxa Evora. It’s been several years since she was just a Level 1 Warlock. Now she’s a powerful Level 10 and leader of the Cult of the Wickerwax Devil! So for Christmas I got a commission of her favorite girl! It’s exciting to have a partner who’s willing to learn about my interests and even better when it turns into one of their interests ♥️❤️

[OC] [Art] Show those teefs! River the Rogue /u/XxsilentshadowerxX DnD: Roll for Initiative!

By now you’ve perhaps seen a couple of my other drawings of River, my happy go lucky scout rogue tiefling. For this drawing, I went for a more painted ish style rather than the flatcolored sketches you’ve seen so far. This captures River’s personality the best out of my drawings so far, with her giving a wide, toothy smile. She might be greeting a stranger or asking if you want to see her rock collection. She’s an oddball to those unfamiliar with her antics, but few can stay grumpy when she’s around! Anyways, I have a few other sketches and drawings to post before I’ll officially be out of new River content to show you all. Dnd has brought me so much joy, and I’ve had a blast drawing River and other characters.

Player want to take a cantrip instead of a leveled spell with the fey touched feat /u/Axle_Greyson_Archer DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Player want to take a cantrip instead of a leveled spell with the fey touched feat /u/Axle_Greyson_Archer DnD: Roll for Initiative!

So my players just hit level 4. One of em is looking at taking the fey touched feat but is asking if they can take guidance instead of a leveled spell. Im a little torn on this because its a cantrip and i know they will spam it because it wont eat a spell slot. But at the same time its a cantrip and they are giving up a free casting of the chosen spell.

I am torn and would like to hear some other opinions on the matter

EDIT: Thanks guys for weighing in. Ive decided not to allow him to take the cantrip in place of a leveled spell. I appreciate everyone who weighed in and suggested other options. Ive passed them along to my player and will see what he goes with.

I’m new to DnD and it feels like my DM is specifically trying to kill off my characters /u/brielarstan DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m new to DnD and it feels like my DM is specifically trying to kill off my characters /u/brielarstan DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m not sure if I’m being sensitive or not, but I think my DM is trying to kill me.

My DM is a longtime DnD player, and started a campaign with two relatively new players because he said he loves helping people learn the game. After they’d been playing for about six months, he asked if I wanted to join their game on a trial. My only DnD experience is BG3, so I know some basic spells but obviously not how it works outside of that video game.

DM helped me make a character who he said would fit nicely in their campaign. We had a first session and it was really fun. Everyone seemed to like me and asked me to join permanently.

Ever since then, the DM has been trying to kill me. I play a very quishy, high charisma bard. Every enemy only focuses on me. Every time we run into a politician, I will roll above a 20 and it’s never high enough to convince them of anything. I have high stealth, and will roll above a 20 and I get caught. I’m constantly getting kidnapped, beaten up, dr*gged, etc.

We decided to play a one shot with new characters. I created a cleric necromancer. He created a boss fight with creatures that are impervious to necrotic damage and poison, which are all my spells. I successfully blinded one of them, and he said, “Actually, they cannot be blinded.”

We’re actually playing right now and I had to open this tab as the other characters are in the fight because I had to disengage, I’ve dropped to 1hp and literally cannot help. I’m so frustrated. I try to do fun improv and always agree with the group because I don’t want ever derail the main story. But I spend every game getting the snot beat out of me.

One of them privately DM’d me during this game to ask if I did anything to piss the DM off because of how badly I get attacked. It’s not fun anymore. I’m becoming jaded when my characters are supposed to be nice people, and it’s making it hard to roleplay.

I am an incredibly new player and so I can’t tell if this is normal. But every fight has enemies that only I cannot hurt. I am always getting kidnapped and failing rolls 20+. Is this normal, or am I too sensitive to play this game?

Edit: Some more clarification. I always ask before I roll anything and clarify that it’s the right thing to roll (like persuasion vs intimidation). He helped me make my character, he approved my stats.

It isn’t just politicians I try to convince, that was just the last few examples. I roll an 18 to persuade a guard to let me pass? Nope, he didn’t buy it, now I have to go to jail. I roll a 15 performance check playing my lute at a tavern? They weren’t impressed, we made no gold. My backstory is that I have an alias with ironclad documentation? Sorry, immigration didn’t buy it, I’m the only party member who can’t enter a town and do the quest.

Many people say I should just talk to him, and I appreciate that. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t overreacting before I did. This is my first DnD experience and I started to wonder if I’m just really bad at it and should quit.

DnD for Younger Players [OC] /u/DPhiAnt DnD: Roll for Initiative!

DnD for Younger Players [OC] /u/DPhiAnt DnD: Roll for Initiative!

For context, I’m a father of 5 (6-14) and a budding DM; my kids all want to learn to play but the youngest two are just learning their letter and just learning to read, so I needed to come up with a way to include them in making their own decisions in the game.

The idea I had was to use a sort of card system with distinctive images to allow the non-readers to easily learn and select what they wanted tondo as well as have enough information that I don’t have to keep looking up what that item does. I poked around Reddit and posted a question or two an different forums but to no avail. So, I started working on making them myself.

I used GIMP as my medium and set up a system that let me quickly manipulate the information for new cards and not have to recreate the details and spacing every time which will also allow me to expand the lists down the line.

I didn’t go crazy and create everything in one go (I tend to be a bit of perfectionist/completionist, so I really had to deliberately pull back on this project) but I dod make sure to set it up in a way that I could easily continue to build and flush things out as I went.

For this specific set of characters, one child chose a Ranger, one a Cleric (actually, the second wanted to be, “…a Fairy that flies around healing people!” – I had to do some interpretive setup); unsurprisingly there’s a touch of homebrew going into these as I’m trying to keep things relatively simple, but I think I’ve landed on something solid for the time being.

Both of the kids will receive one of the two-sided discs that outline the 8 general actions you can take in a turn (top of image). The Cleric will also have the ‘spell cards’ shown that will hopefully pictorially help explain what they are and how to use them while giving me enough information to help implement them including title (in case I have to look something up), action type (bonus, reaction, action), mana cost (easier to keep tabs on), spell type (buff, debuff, attack), range, and other details.

Maybe it’ll work, maybe it’ll flop, but at least we tried, right?

r/DnD For context, I’m a father of 5 (6-14) and a budding DM; my kids all want to learn to play but the youngest two are just learning their letter and just learning to read, so I needed to come up with a way to include them in making their own decisions in the game.
