First DnD session in 10 years /u/airborneguy84 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I joined my friends who have a group that’s has been playing for almost 30 years. They only play 2nd. I haven’t played for 10 years but the last I played was custom version of 3.5 so they were baby walking me through character creation.We are all playing dwarves and they have had several sessions in this campaign. DM asked me what I wanted to play and I was adamant I wanted to make golems. He told me I’d have to probably go some form of artificer and the group warned me I’d need good stats. I have terrible luck with DnD dice (historically) so I was prepared to be dealing with an int of 12 but I rolled (using 4d6 drop the lowest) 18, 18, 17, 16, 18, 15. Probably used a years supply of luck. DM even let me roll a wizard. I then immediately rolled a 1 for HP. All in all, Great session and happy to be back after 10 years.

Telling players the dc needed to succeed? /u/CrazyTelvanniWizard DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I know the dc’s exact number is usually only known to the dm(at least in my experience), but does anyone ever just say what the dc is at checks? Could it be beneficial or add to the game if I just tell my players what the dc needed to succeed is?

A Night Hag Coven is no fucking joke /u/dietcommunism7 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

//Spoilers for Curse of Strahd//

I’m playing through Curse of Strahd with some of my friends and My DM has been running it super well, Its super brutal and the plot and changes are super interesting. I wanted to tell a story about how we fought against some night hags and how much of an issue they were

To set the scene I’m playing Victor Vallakovich(was an NPC but my old PC died and I took him as my PC) We had heard word from the Vistani that one of their young had been taken by hags and had asked us to help get a girl named Arabelle from the hags. We ended up visiting a windmill and finding 3 old ladies, after some deliberation and possible deceit we fought them, it was a tough battle which ended in one lucky booming blade killing one of them as they fled into the ethereal plane. The other two fled into the ethereal plane no issue, after freeing the kids, looting the windmill and burning it down. We got a reward when we got back to the Vistani , the best reward a little guy named Piddlewick ll

After that it was nearly impossible to get a long rest without one of us getting a point of exhaustion and some other effects from their haunting. It made it hard to do anything and when we tried to fight them they would just flee into the ethereal plane like coward.

So how did we figure out how to counter this… The answer lies with the reward we got for fighting them Piddlewick ll! Turns out since he’s a construct he doesn’t sleep! He shakes us up and prevents us from experiencing the nightmares these hags bring.

This was just an amusing story that I wanted to spread, especially since Piddlewick ll is and always has been the GOAT so I wanted to spread that message

How to fight using a vampire /u/roxgxd DnD: Roll for Initiative!

The group was hunting a vampire a few sessions ago, but I think the group with a twilight cleric, lore bard, sorcadin and druid level 10 will obliterate the vampire on the first turn because they already killed a young red dragon. How do you prevent the group from hitting the vampire right away? The vampire’s character sheet isn’t very impressive for a CR 13 monster.

[OC][ART] DnD Comic I drew a while back. “The Grapes of Rhath. /u/Brokencoreart DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I remember playing an Elven Ranger/Fighter named Rhath one campaign and while shopping around I saw that ball bearings were an item that could be purchased. My intentions were to use them to trip people up or possibly try moving something very heavy across them.

Naturally, our rascally warforged would steal them and eat them and thank me for the snacks later. What snacks?

How to deal with players that don’t pay that much attention? /u/XD_Streams DnD: Roll for Initiative!

So, I’ve been GMing for the same group for about a year. It’s a group of 5 friends of mine, and they’re all decently fun to play with. Except 2 of them. They never play that much attention, always playing games in the background or talking over some others (we play online, through roll20). It’s just a simple question I have, any suggestions on how to deal with them? I’ve dealt with it for a while, but it’s starting to tick me off a little bit. I’ve tried to discuss it with them and ask them to at least tone it down a little, but I’ve been blown off when that topic rolls around. This has been happening to the point where it’s kind of killing my drive and fun to GM games at all. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks for any help!
