Trolling a Rouge /u/TinyP0tat DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hey everyone, i have a player that loves to play edgelords. In our Curse of Strahd Campain our Dm gave him (the barbarian) a magical Axe that got stronger with blood sacrifices (everytime something got killed.) Now it is my turn to DM, and this player made a Rouge with a “cursed” Blade. We spoke about it on multiple occasions, i was willing to give him something with a small buff but also a drawback that would perhaps motivate his PC to get rid of the sword. The player said no, he only wanted a buff, no drawbacks. So i said no to a cursed weapon. Now in his Backstory he just sent me, his character has a cursed magical sword he stole from a wizard no buffs noted and nothing, just a lot of flavor text on looks and that the PC knows that him and the sword are bound forever.

I have now decided to let him have this sword, but I want to use it to fuck with the Rouge. I am a new DM and unsure on how best to execute this. I was thinking of the sword being simply imbued with the minor illusion cantrip for its looks. Any ideas on how to make my Player believe he has a cursed sword without actually giving him one?

We will play RotFm (D&D 5 E) Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Is short story Secret Level Queens Cradle based on available anywhere? /u/ExcitingJudge6203 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I saw Brooke Bolander created a short story the episode is based on & that she’s done other DnD stuff in the past – curious if the short story was ever published or maybe it’ll come out later in a book like the love death & robots short stories eventually did. Just loved that episode would love to read/listen to more of the story.

How smart should an enemy be to attack a downed player? [OC] /u/Whitlja DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Saw an argument/ heated discussion online as to when an enemy would focus its attacks on a downed player and thought l’d bring my contribution with a visual aid.

Please note I wouldn’t deliberately target or excessively bully one of my players with this reasoning as a DM unless it would be an apt situation!

I believe an enemy of low intelligence (such as a beast) and an enemy of high intelligence (such as a BBEG) would focus an attack on a downed player, whilst an enemy of middling intelligence would not.

My reasoning: a low intelligence beast will fight and kill on instinct, going for the weakest target AKA a downed player. Whereas a high intelligence character who follows the party and sees them pop back up and shrug off an otherwise deadly attack to any NPC, would choose to ensure nothing remains of that PC to prevent the tides from suddenly turning or to intimidate the remaining party.

On the other hand, a middling intelligence opponent who doesn’t know the party prior to combat, would just assume (reasonably) that a battle axe slash across the chest of a human plucking at a lute in the midst of battle, was enough to finish the job!

Do you have your own opinions on in game logic for attacking a downed PC?

How long are your hombrew rules docs? /u/Fabbe360 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

So me and my friends have played D&D together for a long while. A lot of us love the more rules as written and look at what these rules technically allow you to do. And we like making stupid over optimised builds (often with less then optimal goals to)

But this said we often find rules dumb, find that some we feel are missing, and some are imbalanced for the experience we want.

So we add a lot of homebrew into our game, some our favorites are Helianas guide to monster hunting and the ryoko’s guide to the yokai realms. But the different DMs have also made our own homebrew docs just for rules a lot of over lap but some minor differences. Mine sits right now at 11 pages and i was wondering is that normal or excessive?

Should I retire? /u/SNinerr DnD: Roll for Initiative!

For a long time I have played with the same group of friends for DnD 5e. Nearly 4 years with this group. They are all my friends from long before playing DnD with them. I’ve always been the dungeon master, despite some of them playing for many years and outright refusing to ever DM. I admit I do prefer to DM, and I enjoy putting a lot of effort and time into my sessions. I’m currently a year and three quaters through Curse of Strahd and the players love it and give me plenty of praise and thanks. They are not bad players as any issues we have had I’ve been able to run a session 0 and catch up and resolved things. All except for one issue.

Since we have all gotten busier and drifted apart (left university and gotten jobs and partners) it appears as though we only ever meet up for DnD when I plan in a session. Otherwise there will be no communication or checking in as friends, playing video games or anything like that. They have different friends for this. It’s gotten to the point where I’m their DM, they turn up, play and have fun, and then leave and won’t talk about anything but DnD until the next session. Any other social meetup is left with a “Sorry I’m busy” but then if I offer dnd for the same night they can turn up.

It made it all feel very transactional and like I was putting a lot of my time and effort in for people that might not do the same for me. So I held a session 0 on this and discussed these feelings about 10 months ago. We all agreed that everyone was going to run a session each. At least once every 3 months, to see what effort it takes to DM, let me play sometimes and turn us into a DnD friendship group rather than players and DM friends. As well as booking in some video game nights etc.. But 10 months later and only one player has done this. Another player left the group because of these requests (and some other personal stuff). And then the remaining players have run one, maybe two sessions when I’ve asked for a break because I need to prep some large moment or was moving house so couldn’t host. Note neither of these were offered openly, I had to ask for it or push.

Some unrelated player conflict has come up now and we are having a session 0 tonight. Im considering bringing it up and hanging up the mantle and searching for greener pastures where the players might value me outside of session or atleast pay me for putting a load of effort into them. I’m starting to feel like it’s a job(that I enjoy tbf) to entertain others that they turn up for and clock out till the next one and will message about when its relevant to their characters. Tell me if im being dramatic or whatever, I’m not really sure what to do, any advice is welcome.

[OC] I run a D&D club at the high school where I teach – for Christmas this year I painted a mini for each of my players /u/ShaihuludWorm DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Honestly running the club has really re-enthused me for D&D and TTRPGs in general. As someone who’s been playing RPGs since I was a teenager I’d grown quite critical and particular about games, systems etc. Seeing these kids just having a blast rolling dice and embarking on their first adventure has really reminded me of the simple joys of role playing, and it’s been infectious. Plus, getting to play D&D a couple hours a week as part of my job is pretty great.

So, here’s a Christmas present to each of them – a mini of their character! I sourced the minis themselves from Etsy, and then painted them myself. Hopefully they’ll enjoy the gift and no one’s character will die too quickly and need replacing!

Help needed with centaur character /u/BlakenSethsBricks DnD: Roll for Initiative!

So i’m running a homebrew dnd campaign (still in works) haven’t done an actual session yet. Had our session zero and one of my players was playing a centaur twilight cleric. Now i’m perfectly fine with him running a centaur character in the campaign but explained to him that because centaurs would be a rare race in this world (set in Leilon area) that the buildings and “infrastructure” wouldn’t be made to accommodate his character. A centaur as i’m sure you all know is basically as big as a horse so i thought this would be understandable to my player, one problem is for the BBEG lair they have to go down a well which would be too small to fit a horse down without enlarge reduce spell. Anyway the player went on a rant saying “classic, forcing your players to change themselves just because you’re too inflexible to allow player agency” and why would he pick a race that gives him a disadvantage. I tried to explain myself with the worldbuilding behind it and that he can change if he wants but it ended with him leaving the session and the campaign. So now i’m unsure of what i should do should i simply change my campaign and worldbuiding to accomodate this player or just leave it?

I tried to explain myself with the worldbuilding behind it and that he can change if he wants but it ended with him leaving the session and the campaign. So now i’m unsure of what i should do should i simply change my campaign and worldbuiding to accomodate this player or just leave it?

[link] [comments]  So i’m running a homebrew dnd campaign (still in works) haven’t done an actual session yet.
