​r/DnD A few months ago, I joined a campaign online with 3 other players and the DM on a discord server in which they already knew eachother, the third guy wasn’t around for the first session as he just wasn’t around at that time, and the DM instead of rescheduling or something decided to just, do it anyways, at the time I thought this was odd but I didn’t think much of it, the first session went well, we all had fun. When we did the second session the third guy was there and showed us his character. He was a lawyer(wizard) who casted spells by debating people, and he and people around a 20 something radius around him couldn’t see the spell and it just looked like the monsters he beat and stuff just walked away. I thought it was cool until the session started, the first thing he did was walk up to someone in a library who was alone by himself and ask him “which weapon is the best weapon”, talk to him for a few seconds and then say “I cast acid blast” on an innocent commoner who had done nothing wrong (his character wasn’t aware of this and just thought the guy got tired of him or something) after he murdered this commoner for no reason at all he spent the entire rest of the session trying to make us not find the melted corpse, by staying in the library (the way his “people not being able to see his spells thing” worked was you had to pass a wisdom save everytime you entered the radius”) so when he had to leave the library and the corpse was now able to be seen, one of my party members entered the library and found the corpse, logically they called the village authorities and tried to find the murderer, the rest of the session was basically he trying for us not to be able to find out he was the murderer (again his character was NOT aware that he killed someone) so this was also meta-gaming. While this was happening one of my party members just wanted to continue the campaign and do a quest one of the npcs had given us, so at one point after waiting for 20 minutes he just left the call and the murderhobo left so that this guy would come back. After this we did the quest without the murderhobo and we actually had fun for a bit and ended the session there, we decided to let the murderhobo come back with a different character next session. He pulls up with a min-maxed character that took 5 minute turns, did 60 damage per turn at level 3 and didn’t role play at all, we spoke to him again about his character being over powered and how we weren’t having fun and he responded by offering to help us min-max OUR characters, and that it “wasn’t his fault he was too good at dnd” after this me and the other player have basically just said we couldn’t come to sessions in order to play with this guy since we’ve tried to talk to him numerous times and he refuses to play a normal character but the DM doesn’t want to kick him out because they’re friends (which is understandable) I’m not sure what to do here or if I should just leave the campaign, which is a bummer because I had a lot of fun when this guy wasn’t around. submitted by /u/SpaghetP [link] [comments]

​r/DnD Newbie player absolutely floored me by understanding the assignment too hard So I just started a new campaign with most of the old crew, for long winded boring reasons I won’t go into here. It’s a homebrew 3.5 campaign with slightly twisted forgotten realms lore. The relevant context here is that I based this world as the same as the last campaign but set about 20 years later, so some plot points and characters get mentioned. As always I have a very detailed lore document that nobody ever actually reads but it explains everything from local politics to deities and so on One of my players is a friend who is brand spanking new to dnd andvery enthusiastic. So this dude read the lore doc about 10 times came up with a 500 word backstory and went above and beyond. I was going for a bit of an open world beginning so I gave the players a bunch of leads they could follow up and mentioned there was a festival to Sune in a nearby city, and they went to check it out. I’m describing this beautiful, lavish festival with the high priestess praying to Sune and conjuring multicoloured flames and all of a sudden this new player in full character interrupts with “LADY OF LOVE OR SHAR THE LADY OF LOSS?”…he was so serious because he somehow connected these goddesses in his mind and he’s looking at me across the table so intensely and I was floored, like WHAT I worked with it trying not to laugh but basically the priestess finished her ritual and blessed him with a charisma boost for 24hrs, forgiving his mistake but holy crap it was funny We have since discussed the difference between deities that begin with S submitted by /u/crustdrunk [link] [comments]

​r/DnD Update to this post I have rushed ahead of myself and populated 5/192 possible unique 5.5e level 1 characters (192 based on Class/Background combinations) So far, I’ve really been enjoying the creative exercise of taking what the dice have thrown at me and turning it into a backstory and personality. Nothing too crazy has been spat my way yet, but it was interesting combining Soldier with Warlock, and Guard with Rogue. Both would be considered sub-optimal as they don’t offer any bonus to the primary stat. Here’s the link to the Random Tables, which also links to each character sheet in a matrix. I would love to see others try it out and see what you come up with! Below I’ll share the appearance and backstories/personality I’ve written for each new addition: Barbarian x Artisan – Tiefling (Chthonic) Gar is short and unnaturally pale, with every visible inch of his sinewy, muscular body covered in tattoos. His horns and tail are goat like, which add to his intimidating aura. Gar isn’t good with the customers. A short fuse, combined with a know-it-all attitude to food & drink, make for an explosive combination. Though, when it comes to unusual cocktails and wine pairings, one could be forgiven for thinking that he does, in fact, know it all. Despite this undeniable talent, Gar’s uncompromising nature means he has moved around extensively from tavern to tavern. His goal is to raise enough funds to finally found his own establishment and to run it his way. Rogue x Guard – Aasimar An unassuming, somewhat plain woman except for her piercing cyan blue eyes. Nina often uses her ordinary appearance to her advantage: blending into a crowd and hiding in plain sight when required. Nina is a private investigator, specializing in reconnaissance. She mostly works with the city guard to disrupt organized crime activities by infiltrating the Thieves’ Guild and reporting back on her findings. She also takes private contracts, including assisting jilted women by catching their cheating spouses in the act – a service for which she prefers not to charge Her only real vice is gambling. She loves to put her acute senses to the test at the cards table. Sorcerer x Charlatan – Gnome Standing a little under 1m tall, Engelbart makes up for in style what he lacks in stature. He is always garishly dressed, favoring bright colors and costume jewelry. If his clothes fail to make an impression, Engelbart’s enchanting voice will. As a gnome, Engelbart was expected to have some innate magical abilities. However, for as long he can remember, he has had more of an arcane aptitude than many of his peers. Even surpassing some who have dedicated themselves to study (much to their frustration). Engelbart was quick to turn his natural talents into money-making schemes, often beguiling unsuspecting tourists into paying him hefty sums for useless trinkets (or helping himself to the contents of their pockets while he distracted them with legerdemain). Warlock x Soldier – Goliath (Frost Giant) At almost 7ft tall, Sigmund is an imposing presence anywhere he goes. His platinum blonde hair and beard are both shaggy and unkempt. He is seldom far from Billy, his goat familiar. Sigmund was a member of a local militia, tasked with guarding one of many cold and desolate mountain passes. One day, a storm and ensuing avalanche cut him off from his compatriots and revealed a mysterious cavern. Cold and hunger drove him deep into the mountain, where a voice offered him survival in exchange for servitude. ​r/DnD Please help me make a standing list of responses and consequences for using the phrase, “That’s what my character would do.” I’ll start. That does not shield you from responsibility. Players are responsible for hurtful actions towards other players. Resolve your problems out of game. If it’s toward NPCs, those in the game world may retaliate. Your character is now an NPC. For extremes like PCs who refuse to adventure. “We discussed this campaign in Session Zero. Please make a character who is motivated to go on this adventurer.” It’s the DM’s role to provide hooks, not motivation. Offer additional context as needed. Thanks! EDIT: To be clear, the intent of this post is not about taking away player agency.
