Do projects carry more weight with recruiters than professional experience? If I want to feature an AI/ML project on my profile, would it discourage recruiters from considering me for software or backend roles despite my professional experience in those areas?

I’m targeting new grad roles starting May 2025, primarily in software engineering, machine learning, and/or data science. While my professional experience is around backend and full-stack development, I’m passionate about AI/ML and am considering adding a computer vision project for sports like boxing/football. Can such niche projects lead recruiters to typecast me based on project details instead of my broader experience? Or would replacing it with a traditional backend/software project, like a Redis-based application, better align with my core skill set since I am a new grad who doesn’t have professional experience in “AI/ML”?

Having read this thread for a while, I’ve come to the conclusion that the posts in this subreddit develop a picture that “we’ve lost it all.” People are mostly complaining, making it feel like everything is impossible right now, the market is saturated, and more layoffs are in the future.

For a new grad, that’s detrimental to their motivation and overall mental health. While there are some wise and mature commenters, more often than not it’s just trolling and an echo chamber.

The positive-to-negative posts ratio is about 1:10. Is this reality? I doubt it. People who don’t have anything to complain about most likely don’t even write comments or posts here.

So, when you’re making decisions and forming your perceptions solely based on the posts and comments here, be cautious because it’s not an accurate representation of reality. No one knows the full picture, but the picture depicted here in comments and posts is definitely not an objective one.

I know people say do not be scared, the AI-hype is fluff, etc. etc, but it would be truly naive to ignore the rapid progress these models are making. o3 is seriously impressive at face value, to ignore that is ignorant. Does that mean it will automatically replace a large portion of SWE roles? Maybe not. But we shouldn’t pretend it will have no effect at all.

If we assume these models will streamline the need for developer talent even marginally, which niches of SWE & CS would be the most resilient to these forces? I’ve been a junior only for about 6 months, but it seems to me these models still struggle on the infrastructure/cloud side, as the context window required is somehow too large and the model cannot successfully put all of the pieces together. Would I be correct then in suggesting that cloud/infra work is a niche worth focusing on to remain “AI-proof”? Any other suggestions?

I recently applied to a few Amazon SDE roles and received an email to take the Online Assessment within 1-2 days after applying. I have a week to take it.

I honestly didn’t expect to hear back so soon, and I had hoped to grind through the holidays to prepare.

I am now in a dilemma, because I am worried if the 6 month cooldown period applies if we do not pass the OA.

Can anyone who’s at Amazon currently confirm if the cooldown period applies for OAs or does it only apply once we reach the Interview stage.

Also a separate question, I applied to 3 roles and received 3 different OA links in separate emails. I assume that once I take one of them, the other two would be voided?

I got my BS in Chem E 2 years ago, and have worked as a process engineer since. I have found that I don’t like working as a chem e, and think i would like software engineering a lot more for several reasons such as higher pay, being able to work in big cities, the culture, and the work itself. However, I am already 26 years old and the only programming I know is MATLAB and some basic Python. Is it too late for me to attempt to make the transition? If not, what are my options? I wouldn’t prefer it, but I’d be open to going back to school if I had to. I’ve been researching a lot and was getting a lot of mixed opinions and was struggling to find anything relevant to my specific scenario. Thanks in advance and any advice is greatly appreciated!

Many of my colleagues are more than qualified; however, there are a few that make life painful. I’m an extremely patient person and cherish opportunities where I get to teach a coworker something new… But some of these people are sitting at a lower-division undergrad level and incapable of growing with assistance, let alone on their own. Quite a few of them aren’t even aware of how deficient they are…
