So, I have between 4-6 years experience. I am bordering on senior developer. Frankly could be considered that at this point based on the work I do and the independence I have working.

With that said, I never feel comfortable in this field. I already experienced toxic jobs, a layoff, and feel in constant worry about getting laid off again. I even have clear evidence of being possibly laid off in the near future. My company I just got hired at did a lay off last month and has a bunch of contractors they brought in.

Last job hunt took months to find a new job. The one I am currently worried about getting laid off from.

I’m also tired of the massive outsourcing I am seeing at tech companies. I have real fear that I question how I will find a job in the future if I am laid off. The majority of my coworkers at my company are overseas. This is a US based company.

Overall, I am just very pessimistic from what I am seeing in this field and the trends I am seeing. I’m just at a loss of what to do. Does anyone believe it will get better? If not, what are your plans?

Do others have thoughts on this? Especially if you have any actual work experience in this field for a few years or greater.

Getting yelled at by boss in front of team for not working overtime on weekends… /u/cstough CSCQ protests reddit

Hey,

Junior dev here wanting some advice with a shitty contract I’ve been on for a while now. This company I’ve been working for has had their fair share of red flags, which has made me reconsider whether I want to be hired at the end of my contract period.

Recently though, the manager has been demanding that I work overtime to complete a project. While I have gladly worked OT earlier in the contract, his behavior towards his employees, and a result of his design decisions and mismanagement, I no longer feel that I should be making these sacrifices.

This situation would be different if the projects I’m working on could be put on my resume, or showcased to future employers in any way, but these are all internal tools that will never be seen by anyone else except for employees.

After a rough meeting this morning, I finally mentioned that I did not work over the weekend when asked for a progress update. My manager started getting pretty heated when I mentioned that I was an hourly employee attached to a consulting company, and that I’m contractually obligated to work M-F 8-5, especially since I’m only being paid for that time anyway.

I’d rather not have discussed this during our meeting with our team this morning, but his eagerness to start grilling me about not working for free made me feel like I had no other option.

We ended the meeting by him asking me if I thought things would be any different when I was hired on at the end of my contract, to which I responded that I would not accept a contract from him if one was offered.

This manager has a history of treating his employees like garbage and unjustly firing dev’s who don’t toe the line whenever he blows the whistle.

Has anyone ever been in rough situations like this? I’m not really worried about employment, I’ve been discussing multiple options with other companies for a bit now, and would much rather make this exit as clean as possible.

Since this is a contract position, would leaving early hurt me in any way? The end of my contract is coming up very soon (within the next week or so).

Can an internship offer get rescinded due to an unfortunate incident at school? /u/AngusHornfeck CSCQ protests reddit

Today during my ECE final I was really nervous and had to take a shit. But because of the tight time schedule of the test, I couldn’t really get out of the classroom. And the urge to shit just got worse and worse, I couldn’t handle it.

Now here is the embarrassing part. I sat in the corner furthest away from the teacher’s table so nobody could see me unless they turned their heads around. In the corner there was a trash can and… I really don’t know why I thought of this… But I decided to have a ninja shit in the classroom.

When I’m doing a test I usually like to have a mountain of papers to scribble on. So I thought that I could use some of it to shit on. I took some paper and slowly slid it down my pants. Then I released my bowels…

The shit clumped up on the thick layer of paper and when satisfied I took out the papers to throw it in the trash bin. But just as I smeared the shit all over my ass and aimed for the trash can, a classmate who sat next to me saw me. And this classmate wasn’t just an ordinary classmate, it was my childhood crush. She saw the shit-filled anal mucus paper wrap and instantly puked. To my demise the whole class looked back to see my hands in the air holding that burrito of pure shit.

Everybody I know has heard what happened and I’ve been getting roasted 24/7 since the incident and I’m not sure what to do. There is a decent chance that my boss at my internship this summer will find out. If they do find out, is there a chance the internship offer will get rescinded?

Seeing this sub descending into xenophobia is sad /u/ProfessionalGrand387 CSCQ protests reddit

I’m a senior software engineer from Mexico who joined this community because I’m part of the computer science field. I’ve enjoyed this sub for a long time, but lately is been attacks on immigrants and xenophobia all over the place. I don’t have intention to work in the US, and frankly is tiring to read these posts blaming on immigrants the fact that new grads can’t get a job.

I do feel sorry for those who cannot get a join in their own country, and frankly is not your fault that your economy imports top talent from around the world.

Is just sad to see how people can turn from friendly to xenophobic went things start to get rough.

[OFFICIAL] Salary Sharing thread for NEW GRADS :: December, 2024 /u/CSCQMods CSCQ protests reddit

MODNOTE: Some people like these threads, some people hate them. If you hate them, that’s fine, but please don’t get in the way of the people who find them useful. Thanks!

This thread is for sharing recent new grad offers you’ve gotten or current salaries for new grads (< 2 years’ experience). Friday will be the thread for people with more experience.

Please only post an offer if you’re including hard numbers, but feel free to use a throwaway account if you’re concerned about anonymity. You can also genericize some of your answers (e.g. “Adtech company” or “Finance startup”), or add fields if you feel something is particularly relevant.

  • Education:
  • Prior Experience:
    • $Internship
    • $Coop
  • Company/Industry:
  • Title:
  • Tenure length:
  • Location:
  • Salary:
  • Relocation/Signing Bonus:
  • Stock and/or recurring bonuses:
  • Total comp:

Note that while the primary purpose of these threads is obviously to share compensation info, discussion is also encouraged.

The format here is slightly unusual, so please make sure to post under the appropriate top-level thread, which are: US [High/Medium/Low] CoL, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Aus/NZ, Canada, Asia, or Other.

If you don’t work in the US, you can ignore the rest of this post. To determine cost of living buckets, I used this site: http://www.bestplaces.net/

If the principal city of your metro is not in the reference list below, go to bestplaces, type in the name of the principal city (or city where you work in if there’s no such thing), and then click “Cost of Living” in the left sidebar. The buckets are based on the Overall number: [Low: < 100], [Medium: >= 100, < 150], [High: >= 150]. (last updated Dec. 2019)

High CoL: NYC, LA, DC, SF Bay Area, Seattle, Boston, San Diego

Medium CoL: Orlando, Tampa, Philadelphia, Dallas, Phoenix, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Riverside, Minneapolis, Denver, Portland, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Austin, Raleigh

Low CoL: Houston, Detroit, St. Louis, Baltimore, Charlotte, San Antonio, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Kansas City
