This is not meant to be be humble brag post and I would appreciate it if you don’t treat it as such.

Since graduating 2 years ago I’ve been working at a small team (10 people) as a “full stack” developer. At first I put about 35h per week, but I soon realized that I was much faster than my teammates who have 2-15 years of experience. I began to slack off more often after a few months: showing up at work at 10, leaving at 4, minus the one hour tea break, I pretty much spend 5 hours a day working, including meetings, helping others debugging, reviewing code, making documenation. The work isn’t hard, just some React Node stuff that you can learn on YouTube.

I was still the fastest developer in the company. Fastest, not best, as I leaked a few bugs in prod. My manager said that I was doing great, I was outperforming other developers even if I didn’t have any experience, and that I need to spend more time to test my code and make sure I write less bug. I said we just need to use TypeScript. He listened and I did write less bugs (also because I became more experienced at this role).

Last week my manager told me that I’m doing great. I got a good annual review and a small raise. I’m 100% sure I’m not some crazy genius engineer, I’m a little above average at best. But I’m not experienced enough to know why this happened. What is going on?

Quitting banking job /u/big_clout CSCQ protests reddit

1 YOE here, currently considering leaving my banking job to go back to school because my job is super toxic and I cannot remember the last time I felt happy.

Few points:

  • my manager doesn’t really know what our application does
  • management loves to spout how we are adopting new tech, but I am not on one of those teams
  • my two coworkers are 45+ and allergic to learning new tech. They openly state that they dgaf if they are laid off, and if necessary they can just find another job easily because the whole industry is incestuous with people hopping back and forth between companies, and they know a ton of people in the industry. This is true because business people only care that the developers they work with know the systems and formats that they use (for example, Bloomberg, Swift MTxxx). They are both lifers in banks.
  • layoffs & offshoring to India
    • when I started working, we had 8 people on the team, now have only 3
  • I had to figure out how to do the following on my own:
    • building a REST API (nobody on my team knew how to build one, I had to learn it myself)
    • configuring CI/CD pipelines (as of today, I am still the only one on the team who knows)
    • integrating application performance monitoring tools (as of today, I am still the only one on the team who knows)
    • integrating the firm’s security framework into our application (as of today, I am still the only one on the team who knows)

Currently have ~200k NW, early 20s. Should I wait until I have 2 YOE to dip?

How do you trust another company? /u/Metalwell CSCQ protests reddit

Hello everyone, I have been a software dev for around 2-3 years, now. I am working for the government through a third party company. Pay is relatively low, but i get constant raise every 6 months or so. I developer the same web apps over and over again thus the challenge is gone basically. I am mostly free, I am watching videos, working on my side gigs etc.

This second offer is from a company that are seeking a developer with my expertise.Fully remote. They are expecting a price from me. They told me they are a startup, but the company is not very small, i searched them, they have been around for 4 years, got a big building etc. There are some people working there so on. They told me they got funding recently. They are also wanting me to name my price per hour until i can leave my old job and start there. I dont know how to trust them tbh.

What should i do in this situation? Should i make an offer and if accepted, talk to my current boss and try to get a better salary and stay here? I dont care about this “we are family” etc. I just want to get better pay.

Stripe vs. Belvedere Trading (internship) /u/nutshells1 CSCQ protests reddit

I already signed Belvedere; I just got Stripe recently. Am I stupid for wanting to renege? My thought process is that household big fintech name would make recruiting next year easier.

Pay package is similar.

Finish WGU or Focus on OMSCS? /u/Delicious_Pepper3559 CSCQ protests reddit

Finish WGU or Focus on OMSCS? /u/Delicious_Pepper3559 CSCQ protests reddit

Hi, I’m a career changer looking to land my first SWE job. I have a background working in the lab and an undergraduate degree in biology. Did a coding boot camp but couldn’t land a job so I took some prerequisites at a local community college. I decided to attend WGU for some prereqs in the bs cs program they have. Partway through, I applied for OMSCS and got accepted to start Jan 2025. Right now I need to complete 15 more classes at WGU to finish the BS in cs but am not required to finish it to attend OMSCS. I am confident I can finish it by June 2025. Should I bother finishing it or just focus on OMSCS? I was thinking of dropping WGU completely and taking 2 classes in OMSCS or taking 1 easy class in OMSCS and finishing WGU. I only work part time so I think it’s doable. Even in the “harder” classes like DS&A and Discrete math only took me 40 hours of study to get an A.

Question about Clean Architecture /u/Icy-Manufacturer7319 CSCQ protests reddit

In Clean Architecture, why we do something like this:

my-project/

├── models/

│ └── user.java

│ └── product.java

├── repositories/ #fetch database

│ └── userRepository.java

│ └── productRepository.java

├── service/ #business logic

│ └── userService.java

│ └── productService.java

rather than this:

my-project/

├── user/

│ └── userModel.java

│ └── userRepository.java
│ └── userService.java

├── product/

│ └── productModel.java

│ └── productRepository.java
│ └── productService.java

I think the second one easier to maintain cus every code in a file there related to each other, the folder are whole entity but not violate clean architecture cus still isolated. I just think using first approach just too much work if your project got bigger, navigate between folder that contain lots of entity, make me confused and cant focus to just 1 entity😭

MBB BA internship vs Amazon SDE internship /u/xX_chanceme_Xx CSCQ protests reddit

MBB BA internship vs Amazon SDE internship /u/xX_chanceme_Xx CSCQ protests reddit

I’m trying to decide between an MBB consulting internship offer in NYC vs returning to Amazon for an SDE internship in Seattle. I’m interested in a career in data science/tech, but I’m also interested in exploring PM. My biggest consideration is which one would be a more stable pick in terms of return offers and employment, as I’m an international student wanting to stay in the US.

Also, does anyone know of Amazon letting returning interns change their location for new grad hiring?

Some considerations:

– Amazon is better pay, better WLB (WLB is huge)
– Worse location (really disliked Seattle last summer, have lots of friends in NYC).
– Unsure what team my return offer is to (all I know is it is not the team I was on last summer)
– Not a big fan of how non-concrete consulting is
– MBB internship keeps more doors open – I think I may also have a better aptitude for it than very technical work, but not a big fan of it.
– Working at Amazon 2x may look worse than working at Amazon + MBB on a resume (or maybe not?).

I would likely be re-recruiting for full time roles in tech following the internship anyway.
