Making the switch from QA to Dev. /u/RTM179 CSCQ protests reddit

I’ve been working QA for the past 5 years. I recently took a 6 month career break because I just hated my job and what l was doing. During that time l got into web design and built a website for a friend of mine. I would like to get more into development and have started working on an app. Do you think if I build my own app, backend/frontend and actually launch it on the App Store. That I could get an entry level software engineer role somewhere? I really like the development side over testing and never want to go back now!

Is State Farm a good company to work for? /u/BuddhasReddit CSCQ protests reddit

I currently have a job as an SE but am not too sure there is much growth for me left at my company. I recently received an offer from State Farm. However, I have heard a lot about State Farm losing money the past year and I am wondering about job security. I would also like to hear other things like work life balance, pay etc if anyone has any experience working for State Farm as an SE.

Hello Juniors/New grads, how bad is the market right now? Getting better? /u/Dramatic_Spring3030 CSCQ protests reddit

So I have 3 YOE and work at Square as an SE2, and graduated from a pretty bad school I think right before the economy plummeted. Got very lucky. I am also 27.

I have for the past year have tried to help my cousins apply, build their resume, tried to get them referrals, but they constantly get rejected, and one even gave up and starting working for a local accounting firm.

Is it that bad, or has the selection process changed? I am not involved with the new grad communities on discord as Reddit as I used to be, but I’m tryna get a feel if this is just a common problem throughout or if the market is overall improving.

Thank you again!

Question on an interesting timeline following final step in process /u/deaddodo CSCQ protests reddit

They sent an email on Christmas Eve (my final interview was the Friday before) with the following (not the complete text, just the pertinent portion):

I wanted to give you a quick update as we head into the holidays/end of the year. We’ve been really impressed with your technical expertise and the way you connected with our team. It’s clear that you’d be a fit for both our culture and the work we’re doing at company_name.

That said, we’re in the final stages of fine-tuning some updates to our compensation plan across the org and we want to make sure that any offer we extend aligns with these changes. We should have a clearer picture of this around mid-January.

I know this might not align to your current expectations, but I’d love to stay in touch over the next couple of weeks to keep the conversation going. With that being said, if you’re in discussions with other companies or have offers you’re considering, please feel free to share your timeline with us. We want to be respectful of your process and ensure we’re aligned.

Obviously you don’t have a job until you’ve started; so I’ll keep going interviewing, and respond to their emails in kind. I’m just curious because I’ve never had a 2.5-3-week delay on final interview to offer conversations. Then again, Christmas/NY holidays are a weird time to hire in general.

How would you guys read into this: Delay tactic? Soft rejection? Or something genuine?

Is data scraping a viable career? /u/Physical_Duck_8842 CSCQ protests reddit

TL DR: I did a lot of data scraping. I have a proven track record (Produced and maintaining the best bot in a niche market that relies on live data scraping and analysis). I live in a developing country near EU. I will graduate from the top university in my country (qs top 500 nothing much but ok imo) which I entered with a full merit scholarship.

I can’t find good job listings or the ones that look god offer joke amount of wages after all convoluted interviews are complete. I feel like US ones just try to take advantage of me, even local companies offer more and our currency is horrible against the dollar.

I can land much more paying jobs easily in any other field.

I am starting to feel like my best skill is worthless. I know you can’t do just data scraping as a developer but is leveraging my reverse engineering or “ethical” data scraping skills even possible? You may think I am an alien to the industry because I mostly did freelancing and my big personal project.

Thx for the insight.

If it’s much better, does that mean SWE is going to be like other STEM fields that require either a top school or advanced degree to break in?

It also seems like the hot in-demand skills (AI) nowadays require a PhD.

Should I mention a simple project on application? /u/MajorMagazine3716 CSCQ protests reddit

Hey, I’ve made a custom neural Network implementation and trained it on a bunch of different datasets like MSINT. I made it in C++ and using only Linear Algebra, so from essentially scratch. I did this to understand ML better and I’m proud of my work. Im wondering if its impressive enough to mention on an application to an internship (Im a freshman applying to SWE).
