Cloud Engineer to SOC Analyst? Advice /u/BrianSal_05 CSCQ protests reddit

Hi,

(Sorry if this feels like brain vomit)

I feel like I’m about to take an important career decision and I want your opinions.

I graduated June 2024, I managed to land a Job as a Cloud Engineer at an MSP/Consulting Firm. Been working for 6 months. During college I, did a cybersecurity specialization (A semester full into cybersecurity), I feel passionate about it and it’s something I’d like to pursue.

Recently. I was offered a SOC Analyst position at a private company. The SOC team is small 4-5 engineers (Huge international company, engineers dispersed in different time zones). The recruiter mentioned that the CISO and Leadership are very experience and knowledgeable, the team plans to grow slowly. As some of the SOC operations are still outsourced.

Reason to Stay as a Cloud Engineer (Azure)

  1. Training Opportunities: Paying for certifications and even private tutoring with microsoft engineers.

    1. Cybersecurity Pathway: They’ve expressed that I could expand into cybersecurity within the company. And get assigned Microsoft certifications in the future
  2. Before graduating a cloud engineer told me to avoid support roles in cloud and go straight into consulting, that being the fastest way to getting a high salary position.

  3. Future Projects: The team right now has ran out of projects and jr engineer like me have been relegated to help desk atm. They have interesting projects in the way that I will take part of. Though they are not coming in recent months.

Reasons to Consider the SOC Analyst Tole;

1 Salary increase: 18K year salary increase.

  1. I originally wanted to get into cybersecurity and applied to a lot of SOC jobs but didn’t land any.

I was already unsure whether to continue as a Cloud engineer as I’m a really good developer, but my internship experiences left me not wanting to oerdsie development. But I am also the first college graduate of my family and I feel I owe it to them to also provide for my family, personally is something I want to do. And I’m unsure that pursuing Cloud or Cybersecurity would bring me the level wealth I want for me and my family. Don’t hear a lot of 7 figure jobs or 7 figure engineers from cloud and cyber. And I feel like this puts me even farther away from developing.

I also don’t know if a SOC Analyst 1 position is a step up, lateral or step down from where I’m at.

How responsible are you for design? /u/Logical-Detail7545 CSCQ protests reddit

I’m in a bit of a stalemate with how to proceed with my non-technical colleague.

He comes to me with feature requests that are maybe one to two sentences long “Hey can you implement x feature? How long would it take?”, “Sure, well it depends… do you need x,y,z? Do you need it to do x?” along with a litany of other clarifying questions. One of the questions that comes up often is “How do you want it designed? I can draw up a mock up and you can give me a few yes or no’s on design choices”. But I’m not a design expert and not great with Figma, neither is he, so I give him low-fidelity wire-frames and he gives approval or makes changes.

However, when I move to creating the feature I’ll often get asked to make multiple changes to the UI and am told that the design is “Off-brand” (we don’t have a brand design/standards, it’s just me) and it seems like he blames me for my bad taste. I’ve asked him multiple times to give me very specific details about what he wants when he asks for something, but he never really seems to put in the effort.

What systems do you have in place to reduce friction in this area? Any processes that would be helpful so I can increase efficiency/communication between myself and my colleague?

Is it selfish of me to expect socializing at work? /u/CanYouEvenKnitBro CSCQ protests reddit

Everyone I talk to tells me that colleagues aren’t friends etc. But i feel so alone 8 hours a day working remotely from my home at my coding job. It just doesn’t feel like I’m in a group. I feel like none of my colleagues seem to have this problem, they’re all just working away. Maybe this is my own fault for not having a satisfying life outside of work. But at work I can feel my motivation draining, and then i get to have a 1-1 with my manager and feel some motivation only for it to dissipate again.

I feel like an extrovert in an introvert’s world lol. I just want to have some banter sometimes idk.

Is it dumb to take a break after getting laid off? /u/whoresofbabylon13 CSCQ protests reddit

Is it dumb to take a break after getting laid off? /u/whoresofbabylon13 CSCQ protests reddit

I’m wondering if it is a bad idea to not immediately pursue employment after a lay off.

For context: I have 3.5 years of experience as a web developer.

I dropped out of college senior year @ 21 years old because I was offered full time work as a developer. I had an amazing experience working there and learned a ton but unfortunately I was laid off last week.

I’m now in a position where I have 5 months before the classes I need to graduate at my previous university will be offered.

I was planning on enjoying this 5 month vacation before returning to school and finishing my degree in CS.

After this gap and the time it takes to finish my degree, in total I estimate it will be about 10 months before I’m ready to start looking for work again.

Is this a bad idea? From what I’ve been reading the job market is horrible right now for even experienced developers. I’m concerned that putting this gap in my resume & not investing these months into finding a new job could be crippling me.

Took job at a WITCH company but still no project /u/probrend CSCQ protests reddit

Took job at a WITCH company but still no project /u/probrend CSCQ protests reddit

So decided to take a job as an Associate Developer with a Witch company. Thought it would be worth it in the end to take a lower salary in exchange to get real world experience.

The problem is, I am still not assigned to a client project (Hard to get experience with nothing to do) so in the meantime I am asked to continue working on earning internal certifications in various skills.

Also, I’ve been operating off the mindset that “a hungry mouth doesn’t get fed” and messaging project managers to see if there are any projects I can help them with.

So my question is, what is the best way I can spend my time to bolster up my resume while I am essentially getting paid to just train? I want to hope for the best but prepare for the worst, the worst meaning I am let go before ever actually getting work.

Does being diverse help or hinder you in this field? /u/Dawn_of_an_Era CSCQ protests reddit

Whenever I’m applying for job applications, the last 3-4 questions are typically the diversity questions. I am almost always on the “more diverse” side of those questions; I’m female, a protected veteran, Hispanic, and have a qualifying disability. Though, if I wanted to, I could also hide all of that (except female of course). No one would know I’m disabled or a protected veteran unless I told them, and, unless I’ve suntanned recently, could pass for being a tanned white person.

Growing up, I felt like I was always told to hide things about my race and disabilities in order to avoid discrimination, but, is that still the case? Especially in tech fields, you hear a lot about pushes for DEI and such, and, I’m wondering if these are now advantages for me to capitalize on, or if I am still at a strong risk of being “less desirable.”
