For far too long, Indians have been abused by corrupt companies both in India and globally, paying measly Pennie’s to the dollars for what they create. I’ve seen enough hate on immigrants, and it’s about time India puts a premium on these devs. I’ve personally worked at companies where their tech stack would collapse without these low paid workers, and yet simultaneously the American worker suffers, and also the Indian worker, the only beneficiaries being the CEOs. I have noticed that companies that have mediocre/low compensation don’t really have the drive to have you build great products, they are just hoping for something that just works which is a very low bar. They don’t mind if you work on products that go nowhere because you are not that expensive – you can be an expensive seat warmer for all they care. Red tape will also be very prevalent; there is no real incentive to release quicker.

Companies that pay well/projects that cost a lot often have great expectations and will try and push to get their money back, which can be a good thing because they make sure the project you work on are worth while(a good amount of investigation will go into making sure the product you are going to build is actually viable and there is real value). This also means the tools you build are most likely to get used, or launched.

I think this will apply to most cases, not all of them.

Currently majoring in Mathematics (different concentration) and Computer Science concentrated in software engineering. I’m interested in machine learning and deep learning, so would it be worth majoring in statistics?

I’m three classes away from finishing my mathematics degree already, but I have twoish years left, so I wouldn’t mind changing my math concentration. Got a random cold call from a very muffled voice, likely outsourced from India. While on the call, he gave me details of the job, pretty standard. But then he did something that no other recruiter ever did before, he told me that he just emailed me a form to fill out.

The form was clearly made by someone very quickly. It seemed to be made, however, by someone that knows English well, but was taught in a different, non-English speaking country, if you catch my drift.

It was strangely formatted and too concise. But the fact that they were asking for SSN and Driver’s License ID was extremely fishy.

But the biggest giveaway was when he asked when was the soonest I could complete the form. I said “in 30 minutes, I have to make some breakfast for my wife.” And he immeidiately hassled me and said “No sir, please get it done as soon as you possibly can as we’re trying to fill the position very fast!”

Rushing someone is one of the biggest signs of a scam, creating a sense of urgency in order to get you to do something illogical without thinking. Especially when preying on SWEs that are hungry for jobs right now.

And even if it isn’t a scam, this is just so unprofessional and rude. I wouldn’t want to work with a recruiter like this or any company that hired a person like this.

Already the URL is fishy. Professional sites usually don’t use full index.html at their landing page because it looks amateur. If you take a look at the sourcecode for any of the pages on the site, it’s all incredibly, incredibly, “1st year CS student” type work. It’s definitely quickly bought off or made with ChatGPT. And the stock photos don’t help.

It’s either legit and very lazy or meant to look real to lure in unsuspecting prey.

Things are really crazy right now in the job market, keep your wits about you, everyone!

I am from Kerala and have around 11 years of experience in IT field as Software Engineer. I started with Android (2 years), moved to Web development where initially worked in React JS and then in NodeJS for around 4 years. I am currently an Associate Developer working for a medium sized UK company. It seems as though if I don’t attend the office twice a week next year, I won’t get promoted or probably fired. My manager literally said this to me. I can’t attend the office as I live over 2 hours away (hired during covid so started remote). I am moving to an arguably worst team with not much career growth.

I have worked at this current company full-time for just over a year so they can technically fire me for any reason due to being employed for less than two years (UK Law). I worked for them 2 years prior as a contractor.

I also don’t want to live near the office (in London) as I only earn £38k so won’t be able to save anything. I think it is clear to me I need to look for other jobs unless I can get an exception for my disability but I am not too hopeful.

A summary is that I would live in her city for a few months and live off savings (15k, so have plenty to live in China for a few months), apply for jobs, grind Leetcode and anything else needed to find a better job.

My main concerns is that I haven’t properly looked for new jobs since graduating university 3 years ago, so I am a bit scared. I will probably have a resume gap, but people have said I can create my own LTD company, employ myself there, then complete portfolio work and then put that on my Resume to avoid a career gap.

I am open to all advice, I got some good advice on my last post recommending against it. But things have changed now considering I probably can’t sustain my current job.

I am thinking just to try to drag this job out for as long as possible while heavily applying for other jobs so I still earn money. But if I exhaust it till I am fired then I will definitely get a bad reference if I get asked for one and in background checks they would say they wouldn’t hire me again. But considering they are lowering my performance score for not even attending the office, they would probably already say they wouldn’t hire me again… I can ask colleagues I have worked with for references but I am not sure if companies allow you to get references from colleagues.

Another completely different move could be studying a Masters degree for a year. I could go to a good University, then it might open me up to graduate roles at large big tech firms. As right now I don’t really have enough experience to apply for mid-level roles at these firms and I’m no longer a graduate.

Any advice is appreciated, I have some options I can try but would really like some insight and advice on what’s best to do next.

My main concerns is that I haven’t properly looked for new jobs since graduating university 3 years ago, so I am a bit scared. I will probably have a resume gap, but people have said I can create my own LTD company, employ myself there, then complete portfolio work and then put that on my Resume to avoid a career gap.

I am open to all advice, I got some good advice on my last post recommending against it. But things have changed now considering I probably can’t sustain my current job.

I am thinking just to try to drag this job out for as long as possible while heavily applying for other jobs so I still earn money. But if I exhaust it till I am fired then I will definitely get a bad reference if I get asked for one and in background checks they would say they wouldn’t hire me again. But considering they are lowering my performance score for not even attending the office, they would probably already say they wouldn’t hire me again… I can ask colleagues I have worked with for references but I am not sure if companies allow you to get references from colleagues.

Another completely different move could be studying a Masters degree for a year. I could go to a good University, then it might open me up to graduate roles at large big tech firms. As right now I don’t really have enough experience to apply for mid-level roles at these firms and I’m no longer a graduate.

Any advice is appreciated, I have some options I can try but would really like some insight and advice on what’s best to do next.

It seems as though if I don’t attend the office twice a week next year, I won’t get promoted or probably fired. My manager literally said this to me. I can’t attend the office as I live over 2 hours away (hired during covid so started remote). I am moving to an arguably worst team with not much career growth. I have worked at this current company full-time for just over a year so they can technically fire me for any reason due to being employed for less than two years (UK Law). I worked for them 2 years prior as a contractor. I also don’t want to live near the office (in London) as I only earn £38k so won’t be able to save anything. I think it is clear to me I need to look for other jobs unless I can get an exception for my disability but I am not too hopeful. As of writing this I’ve gotten into a long distance relationship with a US citizen so it’s not too far of a stretch to assume that in a few years’ time we could get married and then I can get sponsored for a green card. With this clarification out of the way, here in Italy we have these “technical schools”: the easiest way I can describe them is that they are kinda like vocational schools but for white collar jobs instead of the trades. They only last a couple of years at the end of which you get a diploma that says “this guy is a qualified full stack web developer/cloud engineer/machine learning specialist/whatever” and as far as IT is concerned they’re a popular alternative to college because they trim out a lot of theoretical stuff that isn’t really useful in landing a job and if anything they actually make you a more specialized than university in most cases.

Problem is, how will this sort of qualification be viewed in the eyes of a US employer? Is it going to be seen as lesser compared to an “actual” computer science degree? I’m aware finding a job in IT is hard for everyone right now but I want to understand If I would be at a disadvantage employment wise compared with people with college education.
