How do deal with burn out in a new role /u/skiingish CSCQ protests reddit

I started new role a few months ago, I was pretty burnt out from the old role before I started.

Anyways my PRs are getting shot down and I’m not really hitting my team’s velocity or targets.

I’m getting pretty overwhelmed, I would say I’m a ok senior, but just feeling I’m not delivering.

The imposter syndrome is real.

I understand everyone goes though this, but I’m just starting to get really tired and just disinterested in the work.

How do I talk to my manager and say I know I just started but I’m feeling burnt out, I just need to take a step back for a bit?

I live in a rural area in India where finding part-time jobs is difficult. Can someone advise how I can get a part-time job, either online or offline? Any paying work would be helpful. Thanks

Big N Discussion – December 18, 2024 /u/CSCQMods CSCQ protests reddit

Please use this thread to have discussions about the Big N and questions related to the Big N, such as which one offers the best doggy benefits, or how many companies are in the Big N really? Posts focusing solely on Big N created outside of this thread will probably be removed.

There is a top-level comment for each generally recognized Big N company; please post under the appropriate one. There’s also an “Other” option for flexibility’s sake, if you want to discuss a company here that you feel is sufficiently Big N-like (e.g. Uber, Airbnb, Dropbox, etc.).

Abide by the rules, don’t be a jerk.

This thread is posted each Sunday and Wednesday at midnight PST. Previous Big N Discussion threads can be found here.

Career advice: Is this SysEng Role a good stepping stone towards DE? /u/dinigi CSCQ protests reddit

Career advice: Is this SysEng Role a good stepping stone towards DE? /u/dinigi CSCQ protests reddit

Hi everyone,

I’m considering a System Engineer position that focuses on ObjectStorage and NAS infrastructure. My long-term goal is to move into Data Engineering, but breaking in has been challenging due to my background:

  • Experience:
    • 10+ years as a System Administrator
    • 1 year as a Data Analyst
  • Current Education: Master’s in Data Science (in progress).

Job Overview

The position involves:

  • Managing and automating S3 and NAS infrastructure (DellEMC ECS, NetApp).
  • Using Python and Ansible for automation and integrating into a CI/CD pipeline.
  • Contributing to audits, system evolution, and working in an agile environment.

My Questions to the Experts Here:

  1. Is this a good stepping stone towards Data Engineering?
    • I’m hoping the experience with storage systems, automation tools, and CI/CD will be relevant.
  2. Long-term Career Path: Could this role help me pivot towards Data Engineering or even Data Science in the future?
  3. Company Fit: I like the employer and team vibe so far, but does this role align well with my career goals?

I’m particularly excited about working with Python and automation tools (like Ansible), but I’d love to hear your thoughts. Is storage engineering experience seen as valuable in the DE world?

Go for machine learning instead of backend development /u/facugaze CSCQ protests reddit

I’ll go straight to the point: Is it possible to learn and get a job in Machine Learning without first going through backend web development? I’m 24 and in my second year of Computer Science. I’ve already got the math stuff covered (not everything, but linear algebra and calculus, which I really loved learning). I know about structured and object-oriented programming, relational databases, C#, and .NET. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love the idea of dedicating myself to backend web development. My question is more focused on the getting a job part, haha. Thanks in advance!

I’m a noob. I’m the fastest developer in the company. I’m not sure why. /u/YoumoDashi CSCQ protests reddit

This is not meant to be be humble brag post and I would appreciate it if you don’t treat it as such.

Since graduating 2 years ago I’ve been working at a small team (10 people) as a “full stack” developer. At first I put about 35h per week, but I soon realized that I was much faster than my teammates who have 2-15 years of experience. I began to slack off more often after a few months: showing up at work at 10, leaving at 4, minus the one hour tea break, I pretty much spend 5 hours a day working, including meetings, helping others debugging, reviewing code, making documenation. The work isn’t hard, just some React Node stuff that you can learn on YouTube.

I was still the fastest developer in the company. Fastest, not best, as I leaked a few bugs in prod. My manager said that I was doing great, I was outperforming other developers even if I didn’t have any experience, and that I need to spend more time to test my code and make sure I write less bug. I said we just need to use TypeScript. He listened and I did write less bugs (also because I became more experienced at this role).

Last week my manager told me that I’m doing great. I got a good annual review and a small raise. I’m 100% sure I’m not some crazy genius engineer, I’m a little above average at best. But I’m not experienced enough to know why this happened. What is going on?
