For those of you who landed a job in tech, do you feel like the path you took was worth it? Would you have done something differently, like focusing on networking, bootcamps, or getting a different degree? Curious to hear your thoughts!

Advice for people like me? /u/dillpill4 CSCQ protests reddit

On my last semester of college, no internships. I have basic side projects & research experience. My goal is to get a full time job. Best case scenario right out of college. I feel sort of lost as to what I should be doing. How much should I be applying? Should I upskill? Pursue leetcode? Any advice or sharing experience would be helpful. Thanks.

Misinformation regarding H1B on this sub /u/NoMagician5628 CSCQ protests reddit

Misinformation regarding H1B on this sub /u/NoMagician5628 CSCQ protests reddit

I don’t know why this sub is becoming an immigration sub but anyways the point of this post is to talk about the misinformation spreading regarding H1B on this sub.

This post https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/s/0LyJexCX9W got upvoted without people even reviewing what the context is. The post was spreading misinformation that H1B caps were being when in reality it’s the Green card per country cap that is being in consideration. This doesn’t affect the current job market as it is for people who already have jobs and helps them stop an employer from exploiting them. I am seeing multiple posts like these that are spreading misinformation.

Regardless of your views on immigration I think it’s important to not spread wrong information and blame immigrants for everything. People with no idea about immigration are making some of these posts. If you want to curb immigration target L1 visa which has no caps whatsoever or Day 1 CPT which is being abused.

How do you plan out and stay disciplined for learning outside work hours /u/aldosebastian CSCQ protests reddit

How do you plan out and stay disciplined for learning outside work hours /u/aldosebastian CSCQ protests reddit

Do you mind sharing your learning habits that you daily/weekly do for self and career development outside of work/office hours? Like how do you structure it? One chapter of a book a day or one module of an online course a day?

And how do you stick to it and stay motivated? I find that without pressure (e.g. required for job, searching for new job, certification deadline) I lose focus and end up not doing anything. Especially if the day was stressful and I’m really tired.

Can you get fired for applying to new jobs while employed? /u/soulo222 CSCQ protests reddit

Can you get fired for applying to new jobs while employed? /u/soulo222 CSCQ protests reddit

So for context, basically my girlfriend got offers at companies X and Y, and she told me I should just apply with my resume to see if I get an interview, so I said sure I’ll do it even though I have no plans of leaving my job as a dev at a large company. What are the odds that the companies I applied to reach out to my current job to tell them that I’m applying to new jobs and my current job fires me for it?

Now you’re competing for work with prisoners… /u/kittenofd00m CSCQ protests reddit

“Every weekday morning at 8:30, Preston Thorpe makes himself a cup of instant coffee and opens his laptop to find the coding tasks awaiting his seven-person team at Unlocked Labs. Like many remote workers, Thorpe, the nonprofit’s principal engineer, works out in the middle of the day and often stays at his computer late into the night.

But outside Thorpe’s window, there’s a soaring chain-link fence topped with coiled barbed wire. And at noon and 4 p.m. every day, a prison guard peers into his room to make sure he’s where he’s supposed to be at the Mountain View Correctional Facility in Charleston, Maine, where he’s serving his 12th year for two drug-related convictions in New Hampshire, including intent to distribute synthetic opioids.

Remote work has spread far and wide since the pandemic spurred a work-from-home revolution of sorts, but perhaps no place more unexpectedly than behind prison walls. Thorpe is one of more than 40 people incarcerated in Maine’s state prison system who have landed internships and jobs with outside companies over the past two years — some of whom work full time from their cells and earn more than the correctional officers who guard them.”

Sanity check that a MS is a BAD idea for ME /u/thisfunnieguy CSCQ protests reddit

Sanity check that a MS is a BAD idea for ME /u/thisfunnieguy CSCQ protests reddit

I’m pretty sure a masters in CS is a bad idea for me.

I’m a mid level eng who has done backend, data and infra work. Still employed.

I have a non-CS undergrad, and a number of yrs working as an eng.

I have an education benefit from being in the military that would pay some/most of grad school.

i am pretty sure the GT Masters is out of reach, and the best programs i could get to would be ASU or Colorado’s Masters.

I would do a program part time only, cannot take a career break for it.

It feels odd to leave this money on the table, but it seems like the better use of my time is on things like certs (AWS, K8S, etc..), side projects, leet code, or joining open source projects.

I work for a tech company now (nothing famous) and plan to keep working in private sector tech for the rest of my career.

it seems like a masters would be helpful if i wanted to get into gov work or maybe a research team somewhere.

can folks help me sanity check that the masters is not a great use of my time?

we only have so much time to spend on professional dev and i dont want to waste it.

Feels like the best thing that would come would be to help with some of the imposter syndrome that comes from having a non-CS background.
