Why do a lot of Americans assume everyone they interact with on the Internet is also American? /u/idkwhatidek No such thing as stupid questions

Like Australians don’t assume this, people in the UK don’t have UK-defaultism on the internet, Canadians don’t. Americans only make up 5% of the global population yet 1.35 billion people speak English. A common example is whenever there’s a post about somebody turning 18 and finally being allowed to buy alcohol and some American will comment “But you need to be 21 to buy alcohol?” as if different countries don’t exist with their own laws separate from the US.
