Singapore may be a small country, but we surprisingly have official maps of clearly-defined planning areas, often delineated by roads. It’s got me thinking about regional identities; everyone knows about “east side best side”, but I’m wondering if we can narrow it down even further. Like those “slander” memes from a year back, these conceptions of people and places provide some type of insight into how we view ourselves and our communities, as well as being generally humorous. So that leads me to pose this question to anyone reading; looking at the planning areas you live or otherwise spend a lot of time in, what sort of unique features or ideas about them can you conceive of, based on your experience? I’ll start with my native Tanglin; I’d say people think of Tanglin as a somewhat snobbish place for wealthy folks. Aside from a high concentration of private housing, we also have the Botanic Gardens and some big-shot embassies like Malaysia, China and the US. Perhaps it’s a testament to the relative amount of empty space we have owing to the ridiculous land prices. Probably the funniest thing with our name on it is that tv drama I haven’t watched, which went on for a lot longer than many wanted it to. This is probably going to make me sound like a huge tourist in the country I’ve lived my entire life, but how about you? What do you think about the planning area you live in? submitted by /u/Mark4291 |
