Hi all, So I’m running my 1st ever campaign and we are 3 sessions in, everything is going great so far and I’m really happy with how everything is going. Except, I could use some help in balancing my encounters.
My table is in flux at the moment, it started with 6 players and is currently at 3 due to scheduling conflicts and no-shows. I’m hoping 2 more will come to next weeks session.
I am home-brewing a decent amount of the hostiles, but drawing from currently available 5e stat blocks, the last session I threw a CR-2 a CR-1 and 4x 1/4-CR monsters at a party of 3 level 1 players (Monk, Fighter & Warlock) all at the same time, and they wiped the floor with them! I did manage to drop the fighter and Warlock eventually, but they were already hurt from a previous encounter. The Monk was the MVP and almost single-handedly took out the CR-2 creature. (the guy playing the monk is a forever DM finally getting to play so they know exactly what they are doing with their character)
I don’t want to kill the player-characters, yet, but I want to try and balance the encounter so that its more of a challenge for the monk and still fun for the other players without being too hard.
So my question is, what would your advice be on how to do that?
