In America there is a racist stereotype that Indian people smell bad. I try not to ever accept beliefs that generalize a race of people, but I have to admit I do often notice a distinct smell from Indian people. The smell has a spiciness to it, mixed with the scents of body odor. The smell is so similar from person to person, even with Indian people that I know aren’t related, it’s always made me curious about the source of that smell?
Body odor is natural. We all have busy lives, and on occasion there will be times when we get sweaty and smelly or maybe had to rush out and skip a shower etc. I’m understanding of these situations and won’t fault anyone for that. What i’m genuinely wondering is—— What is the reason behind that distinct odor some indian people have? Is this odor pleasant in their culture? are they nose blind to this smell?
I’m not trying to be culturally insensitive. I’m genuinely wondering. This applies to many cultures outside of America, I don’t mean to single out India people. I want to add that I’ve had Indian coworkers and college roommates who did NOT smell this way, but have encountered many many others who shared the same unpleasant odor.
