To clarify what do you do with player characters in game when their players aren’t at the table. I go with the “null void” method where I just remove that PC from the map even if mid battle, me rebalancing the encounter to the situation. This may not be most eloquent method, but 2 of my players had previous experiences where their DM’s did the common method of the DM controls the absent players PC and they died and had to role new characters. Just seems like a awful situation I rather 100% avoid.
