1. Unicorn Startup (~$2 billion val)
– Role: New Grad SWE (L3)
– Compensation: $150K base, $50K stock options
– Location: Bay Area
– Pros:
– Recently raised a massive funding round, will hit $100M in ARR next year, and revenue curve looks similar to other successful startups that have IPO’d like Snowflake and Salesforce
– I like startups and want to work at a startup or be on the founding team of a startup in the future
– Company looks like they really value and stress new grad development
– Looks like they have good culture
– Many engineers at company are ex-FAANG
– Salary Progression is pretty similar to FAANG/big tech companies from the L3-L5 level
Cons:
– High cost of living area
– Not a recognizable name
2. Paypal
– Compensation: ~$95K base, $17K sign-on + relo, $6K in RSUs
– Role: SWE I
– Location: Chicago
– Pros:
– Big / prestigious name (resume value)
– Lower cost of living area
Cons
– Team work is a bit boring, more of a DevOps kind of role, will have very little coding
– I’m not a fan of Chicago
– Salary and promotion progression is kinda meh, but Chicago is lower cost of living than other major cities
