My party recently killed a balor in my dnd campaign. Took them a while and they almost died, but they were proud when they killed it. The player who killed it stood over it after it was killed and as he saw the balor’s blood dripping out, he made the quick decision to drink it. I warned him that it would likely have some tough consequences, but he didn’t care and he actually swallowed a full goblet of the stuff. I described the blood entering his system, he could feel it drip down his throat and settle in his body and his muscles tensed and his veins popped. For now nothing has happened. But I know the player sort of hopes it will provide some sort of demonic or devilish transformation. The character is an elf fighter, it was sort of in character to drink the blood, but I did not expect it.
I would expect effects to come on slowly. I want the effect to be cool more than anything. I don’t want it to ruin the character, but would love to create some dark, twisted transformation. It also should not provide buffs in a way that make the character stronger then other PCs, but I would expect a devil transformation to provide more strength then an elf would have. I’m looking for ideas on how to go about this. I really do just want it to be cool and satisfying for the player, but begin to twist them and show the consequences.
I’m thinking werewolf vibes. The type of thing where the werewolf is hidden inside someone. They come out on the full moon, but they also show signs of their beastly instincts. It shouldn’t be something that other players want to do as well just because it was cool, it has to be a balance of good and bad things. A balor is not a common creature to encounter, but it is also not a mindless demon that is like an untamed beast. Just looking for any recommendations or ideas for this situation. Thanks.
PLEASE NOTE: I know the balor is meant to explode when killed, however I slightly modified the stats so it would be fit for my players and I removed that mechanic. It was quite a big fight and I wanted the party to be able to watch the balor’s body fall and celebrate their victory. I of course did not expect this to happen.
Plus drinking a balor’s blood in victory after stabbing it through the skull is really really sick, so I had to let it happen.
