Update: I am going to let my party know that 8 is too many players. I will ask for volunteers to quit (they can still observe) and use a random number generator if not enough volunteer to quit. That way no one will feel targeted. I might still allow the players that quit to make occasional cameos
Even more info: This campaign is long. Probably around 25-30 sessions in length, depending on how much of the side content my players do. I have poured my heart and soul into this campaign, spending way too much time worldbuilding, intricately designing NPCs, and creating quests. Well over 200 hours were put into it. I know this campaign really well, which might make getting a second DM problematic
More info: While I am a first time DM, I have run a few one-shots. I feel slightly comfortably running with this many players because I have spent well over 200 hours creating this campaign and know it like the back of hand. I am going to get make cards for everyone with their character names. I might get a second DM. I am going to ask my Earth Science teacher if I can borrow her buzzer system so that players can get my attention one at a time. For more context, I have a high school junior and my party range from sophomores to seniors
My school has a pretty sizeable gaming club. 30+ people, 5 e-sports teams, and an entire switch library for just the club. It’s mostly smash ultimate and Mario cart that we play, but sometimes Magic the Gathering and other board games.
I recently deciding to give my DnD campaign a try in gaming club. I didn’t expect much from the club, maybe 3-4 players at most. For session 0, that was how it went. 4 players with another 2 just observing. Fast forward to now (session 3 is in a few days), and I have 8 confirmed players with 3 more observing to see if they want to join. I am having a very difficult time remembering character names and which goes with which player. All but 2 players are new to DnD, and this is my 1st time running a dedicated campaign as a DM.
Is there anyone else with a party size of 8+ that has some tips? I love hosting, and the amount of players is nice, albeit a bit daunting. I don’t want to cut players out or tell others they can’t join, but I think I will have to put a limit on the number that can join.
What should I do?
