New Grad Job Advice /u/Kazukster CSCQ protests reddit

I have recently accepted a job offer as a Jr. Software Engineer at a smaller defense contractor. I have an interim secret clearance and will be starting in about a month or so.

To give some information, I’ve never held a proper job before, never had a software internship, and am quite nervous about being onboarded to work on highly technical systems. I haven’t even started and I know I’ll probably face some imposter syndrome for the first while.

That being said, for people working in the defense industry, what recommendations would you give to someone experiencing this all for the first time? Is there anything you wish you knew coming into the job? What is your experience working within a SCIF? I’m intimidated by the thought of working on code with limited access to internet, etc. I understand that for the first 6 months ish I’ll be learning mostly, but is there any advice to try to help accelerate my understanding of the code base?

I appreciate any advice / stories about their experience.
