New player: How to make sure I’m not being an ass. /u/saltpot3816 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m a fairly new player (recently started first campaign, but done a couple of one-shots in the past) but have watched a fair amount of D&D shows/podcasts (e.g. Dimension 20).

I recently saw a post in here expressing a lot of frustration with younger/newer players essentially wanting to make the whole game a joke with meme characters/pissing of their DM’s, etc… it got me wondering “am I inadvertently being an asshole to my party/DM?

Most of my party is brand new to D&D, and sometimes I worry that I’m too eager to get into the game/annoying my party:

-Most of the party is totally happy to hang out for an hour and half before we start playing, but I’m eager to get started, and get slightly impatient when we face a lot of delays in downtime

-I don’t do the meme character nonsense, but I def embrace / look out for the funny/silly twists to the story.

-a lot of the party members (not necessarily characters) are more reserved/quiet, but one of my own (and my characters) personality flaws is some impulsivity… I sometimes worry that I’m dominating the story/irritating my party as a result, but I feel like the story gets really slow if characters dont speak up to take some risks in the story.

Really I’m looking for tips – how can I make sure that I’m not being an asshole of a party member? Both to my DM and my party?
