Why does the gun icon appear on screen, but no gun exists when I go to thst spot?

At Fort Brennard and just killed the Lemoyne Raider guy for one of the bounty hunter missions, and I saw the icon pop up for a legendary gun. Checked it out but nothing was there. Could this be a glitch or something?
