Hello friends so I’m having a spot trouble in my game I would like some advice on. So I’m the DM and my party has ended up recruiting an NPC to guide them through a dungeon, his name is Doug, Doug the dwarf and they’re really attached him (and I dunno why or how). No2 when we last ended the session we finished up a quick random combat encounter and every turn they wanted to know what Doug was doing so I just told them he was fighting a wolf while they were handling the ones paying attention to them. To help keep it interesting since they really cared about Doug I rolled a pair of D20s at the end of each turn with whoever got the higher number getting the upper hand.
Thing is I’m not sure if I handled it correctly, cause they’re entering into a dungeon which has a few potential combat encounters so it may slow down a game too much. And of personal note I don’t want Doug to become a DM PC I’m already managing an adventure I have 13 characters I’m already playing I don’t wanna join them on the adventure in that way.
So I’m just looking for how you guys would handle it. I don’t want him to just magically change his mind and decide he’s not going in since I’ve already decided he’d give them advantage on a few rolls, but I don’t want him to get in the way and just jank up the combat. Any more experienced DMs got any advice?
