Pretty much what the title says. At the end of last year I started to dig inside the lore a bit, and I started to notice this pattern. (Correct me if I’m wrong because I’m still not up to date with everything).
We are called “champions” and “heroes” and what not, but all we usually do is that we are sent in to “soften up” the bad guy for a named character to swoop in and get the kill, or knock out or w/e.
TBC: After we fight him Illidan gets captured by Maiev. Wrath: After we fight him Tirion destroys Frostmourne thus rendering Arthas unable to do anything. Cata: After we fight him Thrall shoots down Deathwing.
And so on it goes. Even here in The War Within it is Alleria who shoots the arrow that destroys the Dark Hearth forcing Xal’atath to retreat for now.
I get that it is an MMORPG. But I just feel like we are not important at all. I’m not sure I am communicating it right. For example in the other “big” mmos (FFXIV, ESO, GW2, SWTOR etc) I feel like my character is someone who is “living” there. Someone who is actually part of the main plot and his/her actions matter.
While in wow I feel like it is just the named characters story, and we are just happen to be along the ride. Like I don’t know a faceless goon or a dog or something.
Does anyone else feel like this? Is this actually the case or am I misinterpeting things?
Tldr: I feel like in wow I’m not playing a character, but reading a book / watching a movie about other characters.
