Why does it seem so hard to find a IRL DND group are they just not that common in modern age? Ive previously managed to find online DND groups but kinda found them harder to engage with due to timezones, technical issues etc. Are paid online DND groups better? /u/Exotic-Cod4067 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hi I’m pretty new to dnd but I’m pretty keen to actually find a group to play with but it seems so hard to legit find one which surprises me as I live in a city with lots of people.Ive searched for DND groups in my area, DND clubs etc. and did find a game store that actually had DND groups for beginners but seems I found it too late as it turned out that store had shut down and when Ive searched to find if any other place near me offers anything like that i’ve found nothing (but people lamenting the aforementioned store shut down and what a loss it was to the community). I did also find a dude that seemed pretty cool that runs DND groups with all the gear but when I asked about joining he said while he would love to take me on he has a pretty big waiting list of people wanting to get involved and hes already running at max capacity for the campaigns he runs which is fair enough, he said he’ll let me know when theres a space but its not gonna be for a while.

None of my friends/social circle are into DND and none of them have any kinda adjacent dnd/gaming hobbies where they might have mutual friends who might know somebody they could introduce me to. I kinda want to try IRL dnd based of the fact I’ll find it easier to engage with as will be in a setting where i wont be distracted, I can socialise further of table with the group/potentially make friends and most importantly wont have to suffer potential technical issues.

Ive tried two online DND groups but they kinda put me off online stuff due to the session being interrupted due to mic issues, roll20 bugging out, peoples wifi crashing, timezones making it hard to schedule things or people just ghosting the group randomly and dropping out. I Kinda think as well the groups I tried online I didn’t gel with that well not cause anyone was a dick or anything but more I was hoping for more roleplay/getting to know other players characters and backstorys but they seemed more into combat stuff and maxing their character idk.

I’m not opposed trying online groups again if I can find a group that I gel with and roleplay with (decent session 0 getting to know everyones characters) but i’m kinda wary. I seen theres paid groups you can join (ive only done free before) and i’m not against paying to play in a decent group but I also kinda don’t want to drop £20 a session if i’m kinda not vibing or people are dropping out.

What would you guys suggest? Try paid online groups or should I just wait until I find something IRL? Do you have tips for finding groups IRL? I’m a pretty social person and am not shy about introducing myself, its just finding people into DND thats hard I dont know where else to look!
