To preface this:
We’re playing a very hard adventure, the DM warned us from the beginning that we should have various character sheets ready, so our characters’ deaths have always been on the horizon.
Our DM let this player, Justin, have another PC. This second PC is his main’s sister (let’s call her “Anna”). Our DM allowed this so Justin can elaborate on his own background story; however, the rule is that this secondary PC can’t have death saving throws. This means that, if its health goes down to zero, it’s dead. Unfortunately, Justin’s main PC (let’s call him “David”) is our healer. Since Anna appeared, David is primarily healing her instead of the rest of the party
The situation at hand:
During this week’s session, we encountered some really nasty creatures that were extremely strong. I’m the tank, so I was going at it and taking the brunt of the attacks. I got to 1 hit point and was evidently in a lot of danger. And Justin just said out loud: “oh, I’m going to let her (me) fall so that I can save my spells for Anna, I’ll heal her (me) after she goes down to zero”.
Sure enough, I got to zero and David healed me, but with a first level healing spell (it didn’t do much). I couldn’t stay were I was because I was definitely going to go down again and potentially die, since the creatures did SO MUCH damage.
During Anna’s turn, Justin decides to move her behind me and says: “I’ll put her here to assist and so she (me) will serve as a shield”. I thought this was dumb, since there was no way her character could assist me if it was evident I was going down again. Meanwhile, David, his other character, was hiding.
So, I got very annoyed. He literally said he would use my character as a shield after letting it get to zero HP. I know it can be part of the story that David, the healer, prioritizes his sister over the rest of the party. However, it was established off the bat that David is a very selfless character that cares for the party.
When my turn came, I decided to desingage and move so I could attack from far away and avoid dying. Anna was left there at the mercy of the monsters and died. And Justin was pretty mad, he even passive aggressively whispered that he was going to kill my character. I’m not a confrontational person and I did feel guilty, but I think he has been playing very selfishly. It’s like what really matters is his own story in his head and not the rest of the campaign.
What do you guys think? Should I have resolved this in another way?
Either way, our DM hates to see us uncomfortable, so he “deus ex machina”ed so Justin could revive Anna (this is the second time something like this has happened).
