Best choice of leather shoe past the bare minimum /u/FreqTrade /r/malefashionadvice

As far as leather shoes go, I own brown Chelseas and black slip-ons. I live in Chicago, so I’m not concerned with something being too heavy. My thoughts were to expand to a boot/shoe with a more polished/preppy look than the Chelsea (say Chukka/Oxford/Derby) but with more substance than a slip-on.

If height is a factor – I’m 5’4, so preferably not something that would make me look even shorter.

Professionally/socially, I’m in grad school (but on the older end at 31) so there’s no dress code, but the people whose company I best enjoy tend to be young professionals who code as normie but like fancy restaurants and cocktail bars, so something that works well in that cohort would be good.

What has worked best for you, and what would be the best colour to go with? I’m somewhat flexible with my budget, but suggestions on the affordable side would be appreciated.
