I’m new to Pokemon Go (started playing December 23), but I’ve quickly discovered the game is VERY active where I live. I’m also blessed enough to be in, apparently, one of the only parts of the US that isn’t buried in snow.
There’s a Campfire group that meets for raids at a really nice hiking spot about 5 minutes from me. Every raid I’ve attended before today has been at 6 PM and in the cold December rain, so people have mostly battled from their cars and then gotten out of dodge.
Today it was Saturday afternoon and the sun was up, so there were over a HUNDRED attendees for Mega Gallade. We all hit the trails to party up, put lures on Pokestops, exchange ambassador cards, and raid the four (!!) gyms in the woods together. There were tons of kids with their parents running around and trading shinies, some toddlers very excited to watch a creek go by over the footbridges on the trails, etc.
Really a lovely community moment! I got to chat with some local kids and even got to exchange contact info with an older woman who also only recently started playing & shares one of my physical disabilities. We were talking about how Pokemon Go gets us to actually do our PT.
As you can imagine, an influx of 100+ people at a local hiking trail can be overwhelming. Everyone kept to the sides of bridges and sat on logs beside the trails to keep them clear while battling.
Then a woman with a gorgeous Golden Retriever came jogging down the path. She paused, seeing a good thirty of us all clustered together glued to our phones, and was like, “What… is going on…?”
Someone explained there was a Pokemon Go event happening, and she was like, “OH!! That makes SO much more sense. I thought you guys organized a hiking meetup just to look at your phones in the woods.”
It’s been hours now and it’s still making me laugh. Like, yeah, how ARE you supposed to react when you’re walking your dog and suddenly stumble onto a random crowd of people all sitting on rocks staring at their phone screens….?
It was a good day. I took some pics for memory purposes but I’m not gonna post them to Reddit because even though they’re group photos & I’d scribble over the faces (so, presumably they’d be allowed), I still feel like it would be a little rude to share pics of strangers without them knowing.
I know a lot of people are contending both with awful winter weather and with dead rural areas… but have any of you guys had nice community experiences recently?
