Elemental vs Status on Sword & Board /u/Aldiirk Monster Hunter: World

I’ve been playing through the game (first time) with my dagger and shield, and fairly recently bullied HR T-Rex enough times to craft the sword & shield (hatchet and shield LOL) and the Anja armor set, giving me a fairly massive fire attack of ~360. This replaced my old poison setup I’d used on every boss up to that point.

I was expecting to feel a significant boost to my damage, but I hardly noticed it. I did notice the -20% crit chance though. Indeed, when I encountered Bagelgeuse or whatever that carpet bombing dragon’s name is, it took a solid 15-20 minutes to kill. A lot of that was, of course, me being new to the fight; however, it felt like my Anja axe was doing no damage when I was connecting. After the fight, I went to the research guys and reviewed the monster’s resistances, and, sure enough, he’s immune to fire. I checked through some other monsters, and they’re all immune or highly resistant too!

My next course of action was to swap my fire axe out for a better status weapon. I chose the Paolumu sword and shield since it does blast damage. However, the base damage ended up being so low that my Anja weapon was actually better even if the monster was immune to the fire hits.

So, to cut a long story short, are status weapons or elemental weapons generally stronger on sword and shield? I guess I could just make 2-3 elemental weapons and choose between them based on target.

(For what it’s worth, I’m about to fight Nergigante, who I’m guessing will also be fire-immune as a dragon.)

tl;dr: Status buildup or elemental (switching to hit weaknesses) for sword and board?
