Campaign is not going as intended /u/Styxes1313 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’ve been a DM for over a year now, running a new campaign with new players. The premise of the campaign is relatively simple: it’s a cosmic horror story about ancient entities trapped in a magical prison. One of these entities was accidentally freed by the players, and now it’s working to release the others.

In the beginning, things went well. We played quickly and with a lot of interest during the initial arc, where the first entity was released. However, after that, things became a bit chaotic. I gave the players a letter from the cult associated with the freed entity, clearly outlining the main quest of the campaign. Yet, even after months, they still haven’t acted on it.

As a DM, it’s really disheartening when the things you’ve planned aren’t being engaged with. To make matters worse, the party split up because one player refused to go along with the others. Now, I’m stuck with a group that isn’t following the main plot (which I admit might be my fault for giving them too much freedom, as I wanted to avoid railroading) and is fractured.

We recently had about a month-long break due to a player being sick, and during that time, I couldn’t come up with a solution that doesn’t feel flat or boring.

I’ve spoken to my players about this, and they’ve said they’re having fun and enjoying the campaign as it is. But I feel stuck and don’t know how to move forward.

People of Reddit, please help! What are your ideas or suggestions?
