TTIFU (“This Thing I Fucked Up” Dnd Edition) by making an important backstory NPC’s name be a derivative off of “Culling”. /u/AintNoMushroom DnD: Roll for Initiative!

So, this year in September, after I group I was in got canned, I started to look for games again, and I ended up in a new group in a Domains of Dread campaign! Everyone’s so lovely, the DM maintains the game well, fun all around. After session 0, we talk about characters, I pick my Kobold Dhrampir, roll stats, pick class, and then we sign off, being asked to get the DM backstory prior to the session.

So, I get some creative juices flowing, and start developing this characters backstory. With permission, and encouragement, to develop a detailed backstory, I went ALL out, talking about my characters species (Snake-Kobold because it’s cool), culture, origins, then my characters origins, early life, the whole nine yards.

At one part, talking about how my character, Azrael Twofang (yes I know, names are not my forte, as you will read in a second) got turned INTO a Dhrampir, I decided to make an NPC, a Dangerous Vampire Cult Leader. I was stuck on his name, until I took a pin off of how I made Azrael. My thought process of making names is taking a specific trait, or part of the characters personality, and finding a word derivative of that name, or finding a cool name, so with that knowledge, I began to develop this Vampire. I thought of how he would “Cull” people, or creatures to drink their blood, so, I got to work!

At last, my backstory was completed, and I sent it in to my DM, got approved, and then we started playing! A few months go by, and OOC, and outside of the session, we started talking about our characters, and some details about them. All the while I am reading through my backstory. And then something clicked about my vampire lords name.

What was his name, you ask?

“Vampire Lord Maxis Cullen.”

To my horrified realization, in my backstory I have made a group of Vampires under the surname of “Cullen”. I told my DM this, and they joked about “Well we HAVE to go to Kartakass” which is the domain of werewolves. One of the other players said that he thought I was just making a joke about the name.

TL;DR: I accidentally made the Vampire Cullen family from Twilight canon in this game.
