For some background, 23 year old, live in a country where the average monthly income is 150$. I graduated with a Master’s degree this July, and after a month of job searching and two interviews, I got my first job as a backend JSF developer this October (this is more of a statement about the job market in my city rather than my qualifications).
A few days ago I was approached by a friend from uni telling me they’re looking for good developers at this big company he’s working at, for a position that pays more, is more interesting and has better benefits (possibility of getting a service car) than my current one. This position entails some work with hardware drivers and embedded systems, something that is more in line with my interests than the soul sucking JSF job.
Fast forward two days and after passing the interview this morning, I seem to have gotten a favourable response.
I really want to take this position yet I wouldn’t want to leave my current coworker as the sole the developer on our product (only 10 employees). In addition I can’t help but feel a sense of debt towards my current employer. Not only for taking a chance on me, but also for spending significant time and effort getting me familiar with the codebase, and to a lesser extent, paying my salary for the last three months.
Two other minor issues I’m quarreling with is that this position would add an hour two my commute in each direction. Given that my commute is already quite long, this is particularly noteworthy. The other issue is that they require me to stay with them for a minimum of two years and I might have some plans for immigrating to either France or Germany by next September or so if possible, however it’s not a sure thing.
I apologise in advance for the bad formatting or if this was a difficult read, as I am not used to writing bigger texts in English.
