Running a prologue with “back up characters” /u/Significant_Win6431 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m going to run Rime of the frost maiden in the next few months, I’m debating with the idea of running a prologue set 2 years before the campaign. Some parts of the campaign reference events in thr 3.5 legacy of the crystal shard, I like a couple of relevant quests but not the full campaign.

The prologue party would be caravan guards who bring a shipment of harper weapons to ten towns so not alot of freedom in backstory. Any PC class they want. It would finish with a TPK due to chain lightning scroll.

Main campaign would be returning to level 1 characters. Saves me from doing backstory of why heroes of the ten towns revert to level 1 and sitting on their asses for 2 years while ten towns becomes a horror setting.

Concerns with finishing the prologue with a designed TPK. Is that it would anger my PCs and depending how I introduce it they may be expecting it because they would be using relatively shallow backstory “back up characters”.

Has anyone tried something like this before? How did it work out?
