So long story short I graduated in 2019 with a CS degree in Canada from a mid level University with no internships. At the time, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be a developer. I figured I’d give teaching abroad a shot and flew abroad to Asia to teach English for a couple of years. I came back in late 2021 wanting to get back into coding but with no relevant job experience, I ended up doing a 1 year college program in programming in order to try and land a internship or anything.
Anyway, this got me a 4 month internship (co-op in Canada) at the end of it where I worked as an Automation Engineer for a mid sized healthcare company. I wasn’t able to land a full-time role there afterwards.
Fast forward to the end of that, it’s the end of 2022 and I’m looking for work having a few Junior dev role interviews but eventually I got an offer for a manual QA role that was remote. Although not what I wanted, with the job market as tough as it is, I had to take it. I wasn’t getting a lot of dev interviews and had bills to pay.
Fast forward 2 years and I’m currently still in that role making about 71k a year total compensation working remotely (65k + 10% bonus yearly). At my current role I tried to make strides through the past 2 years to internally transition/apply to other roles within the company like Automation or Dev roles. I got rejected each time for lacking experience, essentially our company just likes to hires Seniors with the current market conditions.
Recently I’ve started coding again on the side and doing leetcode challenges as well. I’m curious about my current role being a manual QA. If I start mass applying to jobs next year, would it be best to leave this role off my resume completely and just list the previous internship with my Degree? Since this current role of mine involves no coding at all.
I realize the job market is still a shit show and no one knows how things will be next year yet but I figured I’d ask here. Any help would be appreciated!
