Starting campaign at lvl 3. Let players start with 1 approved uncommon magic item or give out enough loot for everyone. /u/LordTyler123 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m a new dm preping for my 1st campaign with a group in a lvl3 undead oneshot that will progress into a full campaign if it works out. I don’t want to give out magic items to much but I don’t want anyone to feel left out if they don’t get one. I’m considering letting everyone start off with an uncommon magic item along as they give their character a story about how they got it as if they had completed a difrent lvl 1-3 quest before this oneshot. I would need to approve the item 1st so they aren’t all starting with winged boots. How do other dms handle this?
