My 4pc+1dm table just finished a 5 session minicampaign that has been an all time blast. A great little mystery story ending up with a Xorn as final boss.
Our party were a level 3 rogue, sorc, CotM druid and Pali (me). Because of how the battle started I wasn’t in melee range yet in turn 1 and 2, but in the meantime two things happen: when first a piercing attack and second a slashing attack hit the Xorn, the DM-RP indicates it’s resistant.
In the turn before I get in melee range I use my action to switch my (piercing) morningstar for my (bludgeoning) versatile staff (1h+shield). I also activated Divine Favor and Searing Smite in the two turns I was out of range.
Then there’s turn 3. To hit? Nat 20. 1d8? 7 (doubled). Divine favor 1d4? 1 (doubled). Searing smite 1d6? 5 (doubled). Divine Smite? 13 (doubled). 52 damage. Because of our rogue’s sneak attack and druid’s wildshaped bear attacks, this was enough for the kill.
“This is why I hate paladins,” our sorc said.
The session finished way earlier than planned but we filled the rest of the time talking through the previous sessions and laughing about the highlights. All in all 10/10 would ruin final campaign boss again.
