Why do some homeless people sleep or set up tents/shelters on public sidewalks? /u/MoistCloyster_ No such thing as stupid questions

I drove by a guy who had set up a tent on a busy sidewalk earlier. There wasn’t much room to get around so people had to walk a bit into the street to get by. Why not set up in a much more secluded area like woods or abandoned buildings? Wouldn’t it be safer and much less likely of being ran off by cops or other people?
