Why Do So Many People in North America Have Allergies? /u/OkCarpenter396 No such thing as stupid questions

Hello everyone,

So I’m originally from China and moved to Canada when I was 16. Back in China, I never saw anyone with allergies—like, it just wasn’t a thing people talked about or dealt with. But after moving here, it feels like almost everyone has some kind of allergy: peanuts, gluten, dairy, cats, pollen—you name it. I’ve even heard of people being allergic to the cold or sunlight!

It makes me wonder: are allergies actually more common here, or are people just more aware of them and get tested more? Or could it be something about the environment in North America—like pollution, diet, or maybe kids here aren’t exposed to as many germs growing up?

What do you think? Is this just a cultural difference, or is there something about living in North America that makes allergies more likely? Thanks everyone!
