Is it OK to have the players do a roll that’s technically unnecessary? /u/ImScaredOfEyes DnD: Roll for Initiative!

EDIT: I don’t want the players to realize it’s a dream until it ends. That’s why I thought of having a roll happen, because that feels more realistic for ‘normal’ gameplay. I feel like if there is a moment of me simply stating what’s happening, it’ll be noticeably different from the previous scenes, and the point is for the players to think this is actually happening, until the end when I say “You wake up.” Sorry for not being clearer lol.
I want to have a scary dream happen, but at first the characters don’t realize they’re dreaming. My problem is this – I feel like if I just monologue about what’s happening, the vibe of “Oh shit, this is actually happening to me, I’m in danger!” won’t be there AT ALL.
So I thought that at the beginning I could make them roll a group Perception check with a DC=5 or even DC=0, and (if they succeed) tell them that they realize something’s not right (then proceed to say what’s not right). That roll is pretty hard to fumble, and once again – I feel like that would add to the illusion this is actually happening to the characters. What do you think?
