Why isn’t there a major city along the Michigan side of Lake Michigan? /u/MoistCloyster_ No such thing as stupid questions

Milwaukee Wisconsin, Chicago Illinois and Gary Indiana are all large cities along Lake Michigan. Why isn’t there one on the Eastern side of the lake?
