Why is the drinking age in the U.S. 21, but you can enlist in the military at 18? /u/Extreme-Contract-180 No such thing as stupid questions

You can vote, sign contracts, and join the military at 18, but you’re not allowed to legally buy a beer until you’re 21. What’s the reasoning behind this? If you’re considered mature enough to potentially die for your country, shouldn’t you be trusted with alcohol too? It seems inconsistent. What’s the logic here?
