For the love of god, always mine iron ore. If you can afford to buy it and have a place to store it, buy it. Mining malachite and shit is cool, but you ALWAYS need iron, like, ungodly amounts of it. A few heavy armors use it to forge it, you need it for building houses (unless there are mods to eliminate it). Just always mine iron ore.

Edit: the only point I’m making is that while iron itself isn’t amazing, it is a precursor to SO MANY things, so it gets used a lot. Regardless of how you are playing, there is almost zero chance you won’t find a use for iron. Crafting gear or building shit or transmuting, it gets used often.
