Yesterday I met two players for a Articuno max battle. They weren’t total beginners, but were also not ready for Dmax battles. They recently joined the community’s group chat and said they were going to try and battle Articuno
Arriving at the place, we looked around to see if any energy spots already had Pokémon, and the closest one had only 1, while the others had 0, so that was gonna be it. Entering the lobby, I saw their teams were absurdly weak. They were bringing Chameleon and Charmander for the Articuno battle. They saw my 2800+ cp team and realized they needed to improve theirs.
Happily, they had some candy and rare candy of relevant species. One evolved a Blastoise and already had a Machamp, but not enough candy for a Charizard. The other evolved a Charizard and some other pokemon, but both were missing a third. That’s when trade evolutions came in handy.
We created a group and became friends on the game. The guy that already had a Machamp got a Gastly from me, and 25 candies later he got a Gengar. The girl got a Machop, and 25 candies later got a Machamp. We adjusted our attacks with TMs, talked a bit of strategy, and faced the Legendary Bird.
I lead with a Metagross capable of healing, and packed a Cinderace and Charizard. We talked during the fight, healing when needed. Articuno was hitting slow but also dropping slow. The girl fell, then the guy fell, and in the end, when Articuno was already in the red, its rock attack destroyed my Charizard. It really felt like two more cycles of dmaxing would be enough.
We healed our Pokémon, powered up a bit, and I changed Cinderace with Toxtricity. The second battle was faster, the guy’s team was demolished really quickly, but kept on rooting, which maybe was a good thing because my dmax meter was rising quickly. Metagross took the hits and gmax Charizard damaged the bird. Toxtricity didn’t do much, really. The girl’s team also feel and, with Articuno’s health diminishing, we were able to defeat the ice bird. We cheered and high-fived.
It was their first Articuno. They had seen the Galarian version but didn’t catch it. They had been playing for less than a year. I told them all about our community and check-ins and events and local prizes and the Campfire flag and postcards we get, and they seemed eager to join our next raids event. We had a nice time, traded a few more pokemon, and went on our way.
And Machop and Gastly, having the second evolution be free, really helped. So a lesson here is: keep some dmax Pokémon, you might help someone who might help you back. Without Machop and Gastly, they wouldn’t have any Articuno, and I would have got a last one on the last day.
And let’s see what Zapdos has in store for us today!
